Great Series, But Season 5 Subpar

This is one of our favourite series to watch, for much the same reasons noted by other reviews; landscape, setting, acting, story writing, great police drama minus pointless and gratuitous violence. All that being said, we were disappointed with this seasons writing; it felt like the writers/director were trying too hard, space was getting filled with endless driving too and fro, and the side romance didn’t seem to fit with-in the overarching storyline/character development. Will watch it again, though, and maybe there will be something to redeem the season.

If you enjoyed the first 4 seasons for their writing and direction, be forewarned that neither is up to snuff in the fifth season. We were yelling at the screen in frustration and we almost gave up halfway through (though the finale was some consolation).
This said, the performers managed some stellar acting despite the material. Rakie Ayola's Olivia was particularly remarkable.

Fantastic series! Love the suspense, the people, the actors, ( don’t change any of them) the feeling of the place, magnificent scenery, even the music is great!! Hope it continues for many more seasons.

Shetland is absolutely excellent every way you look at it - acting, writing, storytelling - all very compelling. The lead actor is superb. The landscapes are lovely. Pacing is perfect. Top shelf for those who love detective shows without gratituous violence. Lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing. Every season is excellent!
