Six-time Olympic medalist Aly Raisman first captivated the world with her incredible floor routines, grit, and grace both times she competed in the Olympics. And she riveted the world again—this time with her vulnerability and bravery—when she courageously shared her story as a survivor of sexual abuse. Inspired by an army of survivors, Aly continues to advocate for systematic changes within the sport of gymnastics and the eradication of sexual abuse. Now retired from gymnastics, Aly is passionate about normalizing the conversation around mental health and encouraging positive body image with partners such as Aerie.
In this conversation with Daniella, Aly opens up about her dedication to mental health, explains why it was important for her to try out different therapists before settling on one, and talks about ways she decompresses after a particularly challenging session. She also talked about her approach to business – and how she’s motivated to work with partners and organizations who share the same mission and values.

I feel fortunate to have the Wondermind newsletter in my inbox a few times a week. I do actually read them, and look forward to them. When I saw in the newsletter that a podcast was coming out, I knew I’d give it a try. I’m giving it five stars because I appreciate the types of honest conversations I have access to, I can sit with them, skip it back, listen again and soak in— specifically Kaur’s account of depression and her childhood—and feel less alone. I dream of being a small business owner, but I have often worried that I’m too emotional/anxious to make it happen. My insecurities about being a woman in the business world have made me step back from my dreams. With this podcast I’m really looking forward to finding some confidence and curiosity. I’m thankful for Wondermind and what it has done for me so far, I hope this podcast will be another addition to my wellness toolkit.

At first I wasn’t sure how much I would get from this podcast, as I never really related to the people and icons who find themselves on top of the business world. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see how candid and vulnerable the conversations were, and enjoyed listening! Sharing stories about people’s journeys with mental illness help validate that we are all not alone in this experience of being human.
This podcast is only one episode in, but already I think it’s done great work in creating representation for people with mental illness in the taboo world of business, where feelings aren’t known to come first. I’m excited to listen in and see how this podcast grows!

Mental health is just as important in your daily life as it is in your work. If you aren’t taking care of yourself, work will be difficult and you won’t enjoy it. I’m so glad Daniella is shining a light on this! I’m so excited to hear everyone’s stories and experiences to try different tactics and identify which ones work for me.
