Description

Patients in search of a miracle cure end up in critical condition. The race is on to find out what went wrong before more people get hurt. The trail leads back to a medical company with slick marketing and a charismatic CEO. And to a multibillion dollar stem cell industry where greed and desperation collide. Laura Beil, the award-winning host and reporter of “Dr Death,” returns for this six-part investigative series from Wondery, the makers of “Dirty John” and “The Shrink Next Door.”

Very informative

I believe in evidenced based health care. So keep that bias in mind when you read my review.
This is an incredibly well done podcast. Very well researched. Some excellent interviews. It also highlighted some extremely important aspects of experimental medical treatments that are not backed by science, in the way they are marketed. For example stem cells for arthritis.
What I enjoy most and why I recommend it to folks is: it encourages you to think about how you interact with the health care system. How important is to ask questions and look into the options you are considering. It also helps educate folks on how various medical practices are regulated and where the current gaps are. It provides information about how clinical research is done with new drugs and treatment.

Shocking

This is such a well done podcast. I donated stem cells when my daughter was born (1998). My uncle had just died from Parkinson’s, I hoped it would further the research- I sure hope they didn’t end up in the hands of these scammers. An interesting follow up would be the women who donated, and what did they think they were donating to.

John is a Snake

I should not have insulted snakes. This John fella’ is so sleazy , self-important, self aggrandizing, ... AND all his friends are rich and live in big houses. I’m impressed...!NOT! I am enjoying listening to this series. I feel for the reporter/researcher who had to spend time with John gathering info for this podcast. She must have a great poker face.

Greed of Men

Thank you for exposing this. Hopefully others will listen and be safe. I found John to be a Greedy uncaring person except for his wallet. Would love to see him in jail.

John K ... piece of work

“Nothing will ever match the emotions I felt when my dad moved away” ......... apparently not even finding out that HIS product and complete lack of care or accountability in something as crucial as the medical field has cost people their entire quality of life... as if his dad moving away is comparable to his product almost costing someone their fathers life.
Absolute piece of work - he should not be allowed to produce for the medical field.

Irresponsible

This podcast is exasperating and poorly researched. They seem to completely overlook the fact that STEM CELL THERAPY IS NOT A VALID MEDICAL TREATMENT IN THE WAY DESCRIBED. Please, please do not think that you can have stem cells injected randomly and that they will cure your joint pain. It simply does not work that way. We already have stem cells in our bodies in our bone marrow. Science still has a long way to go in this field (one day it will be great) but this podcast seems to suggest that it already works. Reckless.

Usually I enjoy...

This show just abruptly ends. I thought there’d be like one or two more episodes to nicely finish this show up. I was disappointed nothing more.

Bad Batch is excellent

Having been appalled by full page ads in my local paper that tout the false claims of stem cell “miracle” cures, Bad Batch offers something to share with potential victims so they can better understand the reality of the scam....and make a more informed choice. The reporting is excellent, the narrative engaging, and the information presented clearly. Another winner from Wondery...thanks so much.

Greed

Great reporting! Binge worthy and terrifying on just what greed does. Preying on vulnerable people is just vile, it would be so interesting to see what is happening in Canada with Stem cel treatments.

Too many interruptions

The stories are good but there are way too many ads and other interruptions.

Cord blood stem cells

I donated my baby’s cord blood to a public cord blood bank. Should I stop them from using it? You make all cord blood sound bad but I know that Duke has done good work with cerebral palsy and autism. I know someone with CO - that’s why I donated it. Now I’m worried!

Provides too much of a platform for narcissists

The subject matter is interesting but I keep waiting for the part where the focus isn’t on empathizing with the whining narcissists that caused this issue. It seems like the show handles John with much more care than the poor writer who wrote articles promoting stem cell treatment and literally had nothing to do with the terrible circumstances.
Even if the journalism is aiming to be subversive or trying to avoid showing bias, there’s a way to do that without letting John tell stories about how awful his childhood was because his parents got divorced. Or giving time to his mom to rant about how her poor do-gooder son is being targeted by people.
I expect more from Wondery and Laura so I keep listening, but 4 episodes in I’m not sure it’s going to make the turnaround that it should.
