And binge listening. I love this, and feel less alone listening to the struggles of writing and editing. Just would recommend a couple of seconds at the end of each podcast episode because there’s no transition from one to the next.

Just a great

I got turned onto this podcast from a friend of mine who was interested in story telling from a marketing perspective. I am extremely interested in how successful and compelling stories are built as well but from a role playing game perspective. A lot of the episodes focus on how a story is built from a writers perspective but the fundamentals apply to building and executing on stories for RPGs as well. Bravo you two!! I’m on episode 8 and I absolutely love all these hints, tricks and concepts that reveal not only the various components of a story but how to build each component and the importance of the various components. I would highly recommend this podcast to ANYONE interested in story telling if any kind.

I love the angle this podcast takes as Tim goes through his process of writing with Shawn. The interview style is really natural. I’m learning so much, yet it doesn’t feel like a lesson. I’m a first time fiction writer and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into the Story Grid!

I have consumed a lot of How To writing material, and this has been one of the most beneficial. I can't think of another podcast that has this Expert/Novice relationship where a writer is given advice from a seasoned professional editor. I really enjoy both people's input, Shawn's expertise is very evident from the way he explains things and the questions that Tim asks are great ways to further explore and explain the points from a novice's perscpective. Thanks very much for your podcast!

Congratulations!

I’ve listened to 2 or 3 episodes a day for a month now and Im still hooked. Somewhere along the way I realized a large portion of my creative life Ive been jealously guarding ideas and then never having the farsight to develop them. Now I know that it wouldn’t matter how brilliant any idea is, nobody wants to steal it because writing is so much work! And that’s where inspiration dies in the quagmire. But Shaun and Tim are awesome! A show with real stories. Real conflict in the study of conflict. Dynamics. Swashbuckling extraplanar sharks with gravity lasers.... well not quite. Any how, love the book, love the podcasts.

It opened my eyes to mirad of problems my second draft has. I feel like I am going to school for free (which is awesome because I live far away from any schools and have no money for school!
Thank you Tim and Shawn you are both awesome.

I've always struggled to hold longer stories together and didn't feel like I had a good handle on structure. This podcast has been immensely helpful. Also, Tim and Shawn are fun to listen to and knowledgable about so many other things.

This podcast, followed from the beginning, brings listeners on a journey into the heart of what makes a story a story. While you don't need to read book, "The Story Grid", to benefit from the podcast, it most certainly deepens the experience. This is a great, personal and applicable resource for every writer.

This podcast has saved me more than once in my writing, particularly the ones about the beginning hook and middle build. Tim is not the only new (to fiction) author out there having trouble!
I have pages of useful notes from this podcast, and I find myself replaying some of the episodes depending on where I am in the writing process. I look always forward to thursday mornings because that's when the Story Grid new episode is loaded onto my podcast app. Keep them coming!

I am a technical writer venturing into the world of fiction with a lot of fears and negative self-talk. The Story Grid has been amazing because not only has it given me a roadmap to get started, it has also allowed me to see the things I was doing intuitively and gave me confidence in my ability to write compelling fiction. Thank you for this great podcast and for the inspiration.

Essential Resource for Authors

Like most authors, I’ve subscribed to a fair few podcasts about the craft and business of writing. Most I listen to when I have time, but the Story Grid Podcast is one I wait for every week. The information that Shawn Coyne provides is absolutely invaluable for any author interested in developing his/her craft. The first day I picked up “The Story Grid” (book) I was able to solve a problem I was having with a scene in my current Work In Progress. I continue to learn something with each reading of the book and listening of podcast episodes. This is an incredible opportunity to listen to Shawn explain his ideas and methodology in a practical way that we can then use and apply to our own writing. Tim Grahl does an amazing job of putting himself out there as the first-time fiction writer, asking all the questions that we’d love to ask Shawn ourselves if we had him on the line with us. Hats off to Tim for bravely sharing his first drafts with listeners, and for including so many wonderful reference documents in the show notes! Very much appreciated.
If you’re serious about making a living as an author, and improving your craft as a storyteller, the Story Grid Podcast is a must. So is “The Story Grid” book btw. :)

I have recommended this podcast to dozens of people. There’s so much crunchy, chewy, juicy, crafty goodness in every episode. I’m not sure Tim and Sean see themselves or the podcast this way, but I love that they are archetypes (Tim = the Hero, Sean = the Mentor) in a Hero’s Journey story. Every episode involves the Hero undergoing some test (having his chapters torn apart) or acquiring some knowledge, tool, or assistance that he will need to help him reach his goal (a story that works). Tim’s willingness to learn while doing makes him a great stand-in for the listener. We share his ignorance, his confusion, his feelings of overwhelm, and his epiphanies. I don’t think you’ll find another podcast that casts the Grinch as the Hero in a Hero’s Journey story. But this one will!

I'm new to podcasts and I was looking for a good podcast about writing technique. This is great stuff. Great format. The discussions get a bit messy, but dramaturgy is messy work. Some knowledge of story structure may be a prerequisite. But maybe not. Shawn's book sounds great.

I really love the host, Tim Grahl, and I like hearing about his journeys into the writing world, as well as his questions. I think he poses great questions as well as thoughts to his co-host Shawn. Shawn Coyne is a wealth of knowledge and gets right to the point of what is most sought after in the publishing world. I would recommend this podcast to any level writer. It was avery entertaining and relevant to hear.

So many things to think about just from this one podcast. For new writers or for people who have been writing for a long time without really studying the craft. Listen to this one and hear how much work goes into a scene, never mind a whole novel.

I’ve listened to this podcast twice now and each time I've learned something new. The basic format of the podcast where Tim is asking Shawn questions about writing a novel is brilliant. Tim’s questions are exactly the type of question I’d ask. I found the show easy to follow and the examples Shawn uses really help me to understand the concepts.
I look forward to more of these podcasts. (What I really like is how they seem enthused about story telling. They’re not jaded or negative.)
Many thanks for doing this.
