Description

Conversations with different individuals from different schools and walks of life discussing everything from psychology to art to spirituality to design to health and well-being, to relationships (whether they be romantic or colleagueship or parent with children relationships). Alanis will dive into science, neurobiology, music, travel, social commentary, maybe a tiny bit of political, and feminism (which Alanis likes to call "the Feminine Movement in both Males and Females Alike") the conversations will touch on topics that move the guest and Alanis herself toward philosophizing in real time, as well as illuminate any teachings, ideas and models already established.

Too many interruptions

The guests are very interesting, but Alanis takes too much of the time. She interrupts them and talks too much!

I wish the interviewees would be given more time

It would be great if Gabor and Dr. Neufeld would be given the time to speak and rather not get so often taken over, additionally be given the chance to finish their sentences and not get interrupted so frequently.

Huge fan of both Dr Maté and Alanis Morissette (fellow Ottawa native) but I wish Alanis had resisted her temptation to interrupt him so much.

I agree with other responses -Alanis interrupts guests mid-sentence. I love her music and some of the topics she's passionate about, but let guests speak their piece and then maybe piece together what's most important during the editing process.
Was excited to hear Dr. Mate but felt like it was more about Alanis' thoughts than an equal back and forth convo. All the best!

Very good. Wish she would have allowed Gabor to finish his thoughts. Enjoyed the various topics but would have like more time on just one or two.

Always a pleasure to listen to him.
Podcast great topic, just wished interviewer didn’t interrupt him as much in his thoughts.

I get so excited listening to people , I just jump in and get involved and I just learnt how that comes across ….
I have actually fallen out with people that have pointed that out about me , in what I thought sounded negative, but now I get it!
I honestly wanted to hear more from the guests and felt they were interrupted, what they mean to say is assumed quite a lot.
I’ve listened to these speakers in other podcasts and feel like although the topics here could make for more information, they don’t get a chance to really speak.
I think Alanis is aware as she swiftly apologizes…now and then.

Great guests and topics

Alanis is obviously a highly intelligent, well informed and passionate individual. This comes through very clearly as you listen. Her guest speakers are amazing. What is puzzling is that Alanis seem unaware of how much she talks during the interview, seems like more than the person being interviewed. She also interrupts them frequently. Lastly, I would recommend she try not to be funny all the time, she’s laughing at her own jokes and it’s hard to hear the guest. Alanis is truly very intelligent. Maybe face to face video interviews would suit her better. She’s brilliant, she should feel more secure and let the guest be the star of the show.

Love you so much Alanis!! Love listening to your wonderful guests too! Just listened to Gabor Matte episode and it gets hard to listen to it because it feels like Gabor is being spoken over and interrupted constantly. I bet it must be hard not to get so excited speaking with these amazing speakers but something to consider is let them finish their thoughts. It feels like you are the speaker and not the interviewer. Much love and thank you!

I, like so many others here, was so excited to listen to Alanis and her great guests and I got 15 minutes in and had to shut it off and won’t listen to other episodes. I was a huge fan of hers musically but it’s literally anxiety inducing to hear her derail the convo every time a guest tries to speak and make it about herself. Why have experts on the show if we can’t hear their ideas? One has to walk the talk.. in a show about wellness, presence through active/empathic listening is fundamental.

I would love to hear more of the guests speak. While Alanis obviously is intelligent on the topics, I would prefer if she stopped interrupting so much. It’s incredibly distracting. In an episode I listened to today Peter Levine was mid sentence and I was excited to hear what he had to say only to have Alanis interrupt him and completely halt what he was getting at.

I was hoping to hear Gabor Mate speak, but he could barely get a word in the monologue of Alanis. Listening is a skill, otherwise just invite yourself as a guest so you can listen to yourself. Really disappointing.

I absolutely love Alanis’s guests and was so excited to see Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Mate on the podcast. Alanis is truly intelligent and insightful, however the interrupting is so distracting is that it takes away from each episode. I understand the concept of wanting to have a deep and meaningful conversations with each guest but this isn’t a normal conversation when you are interrupting and attempting to finish your guests sentences. It’s kind of difficult to listen to. Otherwise, I do believe that this podcast would be one of my favourites.

Thank you!

I am beyond grateful for these podcasts, but please Alanis, allow your guests to speak more, instead of having to interrupt or add to even single sentence! It’s so frustrating and almost painful to hear them be cutoff constantly.

I have been a fan of Alanis for years and always admired her integrity and authenticity in addition to her extraordinary talent. I was pleasantly surprised to learn about this podcast and her roster of guests, especially with my hero Gabor Mate. Not only did I absorb the entire interview with fascination, I was impressed by the breadth of spiritual wisdom and knowledge from Alanis and it revealed a depth to her that I otherwise would not have known about.
I found her interviewing skills very refreshing and learned even more about the experts’ body of work through her insightful and personal commentary. Her sharing of her vulnerabilities as well as the depth of experience and obvious dedication to her spiritual evolution with humble respect to her guests make me admire her artistry even more. I can’t wait for the new podcasts in 2020!

Wonderful people to hear speak, however Alanis does too much of her own talking. It would be nice if the person she is speaking with could do more talking. I had to turn it off and simply pick up Gordon Nuefelds book.

Guests need more air time.

Alanis has so many incredible guests to talk about all the things I am super interested in and she has obviously done a lot of work and study in the fields of psychology, relationships, addictions and more.
I find myself getting frustrated however, that she does most of the talking instead of letting her guests have the floor. I would love it if she could just step back a bit and give her guest more air time instead of trying to prove how much she knows.

Great potential for an amazing podcast hosted by Alanis! I think her interest and contribution to the wellness world could be incredible. I do think she could improve her interviewing skills -- Less interrupting, more listening. More questions and less reframing back to herself. So much potential for a great show! xoxo.

I was so excited when I found the Conversation with Gabor Mate. My
excitement turned to frustration when I had to listen to Alanis act like she was the expert. To have someone like Dr. Mate on the podcast but not let listeners learn and benefit from his wisdom is a real
disappointment. Despite other guests that I would love to hear - I won’t listen again.

Alanis has interesting guests and asks some great questions but she interrupts them so frequently that the podcast is hard to listen to. I think the conversation would be richer if Alanis gave her guests more room to speak and make their points without her interjecting her understanding of the concepts.

I’ve listened to only this one episode,
So consider my perspective for what it is.
When I saw this episode I had a ton of excitement. I was hoping to listen to a current/recent hour of Gabor Mate sharing more of his insights and expertise.
Instead, he did more listening than talking, and Alanis (I think you’re bright and intelligent), I was disappointed that I was denied this opportunity. Perhaps that was because you’re not face-to-face with your guest, or perhaps the theme of this podcast is you narrating and sharing your life experience, and perhaps much of my disappointment is due to me coming to this podcast with an expectation of hearing Dr. Mate share his experience. Whatever the case, while I appreciate you having Dr. Mate as a guest, I wish that you let him speak for a longer duration, interrupting him less frequently with your commentary, insight, connection, perspective, and experience.

Love the topics and range of amazing guests Alanis brings to the podcast. The only critique I would offer is that Alanis at times does a little too much of the talking and at times interrupts her guests. It feels as though she’s just genuinely excited about the topics at hand so perhaps this is why. On a whole I thoroughly enjoy it though.

We all have a lot to benefit from Alanis opening up her resources and sharing them with us. It is evident through listening how well-read and well-researched she is, how many years of study and practice and experimentation are behind these conversations. Alanis' mission is to reinvigorate and expand relationship – and what a powerful and transformative concept that is. She leads with grace and courage, and it's refreshing to hear these great minds "live" in all their complexity and humaness away from stuffy conferences or lonely books. For this, Alanis, a big thank you. One gentle note, however. There is merit in hearing the speakers and letting them. Conversations are about exchange, yes, but treating this effort as a greater service to the community by letting the speakers finish their sentences/thoughts more fully would be so helpful. A lot of the information gets buried or jumbled or cut off too soon by the frequent interruptions. Treating this a little more as a journalistic effort would help. Some editing would help too. The warmth of these friendships is joyful to hear, but we already know you're brilliant Alanis. You don't need to prove it to us all the time or show off the knowledge. Easy does it. Please give your speakers more space and more room to breathe, and the knowledge you are sharing will be that much more powerful for the mission (and useful to us) . Thanks!

We need your voice again on here, please <3

I am really enjoying hearing more about you, Alanis. I am now looking back through the years and I remember your songs. Your voice and your lyrics have been a constant. I think that we all have “life themes.” The qualities which are more inherent to us than our style of communicating or our sense of humour. Mine, I’ve discovered are, “connection,” “belonging,” “empathy,” “vulnerability,” and “love.” But the ones that make the top two are “love” and “connection.” I often describe myself as “compulsively relational.” I think that my inner child just wants to hug everyone...
Your podcasts are both familiar and stimulating, thank you. You do not know me, but trust me; we are of the same “tribe.” :)

So happy to hear of the Relationships First project. What a juicy, timely and worthy initiative! My only suggestion regarding the podcast would be to let the guests speak a little more after only a couple of questions rather than a long flow of many questions and observations. As a listener I found that part of the format a little tiring. Minor detail outweighed by your enthusiasm, insight and dedication to this invaluable topic. Thank you and best wishes.
