Great service but the app needs work

I’ve been subscribed with ProtonMail for almost two years now and I appreciate their service.

The app badge never seems to update correctly - especially if I’ve read an email on desktop, so I’ve disabled that. And now I’m having issues with messages not syncing with my inbox on desktop either.

Dark mode would be reaaaally nice at this point too. This app is beginning to feel clunkier and more outdated which is frustrating.

It won’t Work

I tried to set up ProtonMail, last time it wouldn’t even open.

The authenticator on one ProtonMail account was working, but I was always prompted for 2FA instead, now that they’re used up, I can’t access my account.

My other account- same situation, 2FA all used up & the authenticator isn’t working at all- it says I haven’t added any account, that’s true, but it’s not possible to do so.

Notifications badge doesn’t update

The notifications badge doesn’t update when messages are read outside the app in browser or on desktop. Otherwise a solid app that does what it claims to do. Folder nesting would be a nice feature to have in the product roadmap.

My new default mail

I use Protonmail for all important email because I know that my privacy is being protected. The app has been problem free for a long as I've been using it, which is a couple of years on iOS. The most recent update removed the option to select my default browser, which I thought was a great option since Apple won't let me choose anything except Safari. Other than that I have no complaints. Some features require a paid account.

Best mail app for iPad!

This is my one and only mail carrier. Got rid of all my gmail accounts, bought a paid subscription and have never looked back. VPN service is pretty good too. Can’t go wrong with ProtonMail.

Seems great, best security and free option too!

Old bugs May 2, 2020, fixed now, but in that old version it DELETED MY PIN and DISABLED PIN so the app just opened immediately. Still had the regular iPhone security, but still. And was only showing message text for about 20 seconds before only going all white. Older versions were great, and it seems fixed and great again.

Email...from the 1990s

This is a terrible email service in comparison to...well everything else out there. The “security” is 100% dependent on trusting them. At any time they choose they can serve up a different script and collect your password. They neglect to mention this anywhere. Basically anything else out there is better. It seems to be the go-to service for criminals and sex workers.

Great privacy focused email service

Quite happy with what I see. This is a good privacy focused email service. It might not be Snowden secure, but I think 99.99% of the people will not need that. If you’re worry about the government going after you, then you have a bigger problem to think about. I’ve tried the other secure email service Tuta*. I just can’t seem to be able to pronounce it and I don’t really want to spell that to all my friends whenever I give them my email. I might just sign up for paid subscription because of the pm.me domain. ProtonMail strikes a good balance between privacy and usability.

About the app, it would really love to see dark view mode and conversation view. Not sure if the bridge is supported on other OSes like Linux or iOS. For the natural progression as a zero knowledge service provider, it will be nice to have a cloud storage service since you already have everything else in place.

Keep up the good work. Service does cost $, if it is free, then you’re the product.

Proton Mail

One of my favourite best email to use very secure and has many options such as self destruct email to encryption and more only thing is touch id is broken currently im using

Latest ios 13.5 so anyone else with this issue disable touch id and use pin until proton can fix it this solved my issue.Very much recommend.I will be purchasing the paid version once touch id is fixed.Best of the best 👍

Unreadable emails, if password reset.

The first account had nothing important, but reset made messages unreadable. The second one has important stuff, its available in a app, but password is missing.

Until this issue gets resolved, this app doesn't deserve a good rating.

Version 1.11.15 broken!

Since this update, it is no longer possible to read emails on iphone and ipad. When trying to open any email, the app crash and close.

Hopefully, this issue will be fixed soon.

I wish we could switch between accounts

I wish we could have 2 (or more) accounts logged in and switch between them, like I can for other email services. I manage my account and someone else’s, and I can only see both by logging out of one and into the other, or by staying in one in the app, and logging into the other using safari, but it doesn’t work well with safari. It is cumbersome to have to log in and out of two accounts multiple times a day.

New msg notification late to disappear after msg has been read elsewhere

Even with background app refresh on and on the cellular network, the app always tells me I have unread messages. When I go to open them I see my read messages. Happens too often that it’s becoming a nuisance.

On the fence...

Trying on iPad and PC. Would like to be able to adjust font sizes and colour in menus and email headers to make them easier to read. It's very small in the settings menu for example. Adjustability for incoming email notification sound would be nice on iOS too. Have read some reviews regarding clunky Thunderbird integration and customer service issues (Techradar review for one) which is holding me back from moving to the paid service.

- option to change default mailbox on launch

- advanced spam controls like on desktop

Incredibly powerful.

If I was to ask for one change.

The little padlock 🔒 that tells me “stored with zero access encryption” should also tell me how the message was/will be protected during transit.

Did it use SMTP? Was it sent in plain text? Was it encrypted with PGP & SMTP? Was it sent to another internal Proton account?

Over the 2-3 weeks I’ve been using it. That is the Only thing I could ask for.

Great email service

Quick update:

I notice that when I open an email, then leave the app and go back to proton it quickly forgets the email that was open and goes back to the main inbox. This is annoying if I need to multitask, please allow it to remain on the email I was reading

After using ProtonMail since the service was opened, I think it’s time to give my honest opinion. The service itself is great, lots of security features and potential to open this up to other things like secure Notes and Calendars.

As per the app itself it works good but I wish there’s been more improvement with some the UI aspects.

For instance, when I want to search my inbox it would be great if it would populate results as I type as I can’t always remember 100% how something is spelt I’m looking for

It would also be great if messages from same conversation would be grouped together so my inbox doesn’t get so cluttered

I haven’t seen this feature either, I want to have ie: all emails from amazon go to a specific folder as I get lots of emails from them and it clutters my inbox

When composing an email it would be great to have rich text and other features from the standard Apple Mail app

When deleting emails we need feature to check multiple emails at once to delete instead of one by one

Will update with more suggestions as I find

Totally broken highlighting in iOS

This app is totally screwed up on iPad. You cannot highlight a block of text for cutting, copying, or pasting because for some bizarre reason the screen jumps all over the place and you cannot scroll. Never seen such a basic function broken in an app before

I got the code but...

When I was at the point for the verification code, I got the code, and I typed it in and it kept telling me it was wrong, then it disabled me and won’t let me back on. Oh and I want a nickname of my choice, I don’t care if someone else has the same one!

A good service with a problem.

I am looking to move away from Gmail and Outlook, and Proton has been all right, but... resetting your password is a pain in the behind. This is frustrating because the app often logs me out.

I’m pleased enough to try to make this a main email platform though.

Not ready for prime time

Some UI elements freeze and don’t update until the app is forced to quit and restarts. It also fails to update messages frequently. Needs quite a bit of work.

Not thrilled with forced updates

I'd like to have the option to update the app when I want to. Suddenly not having access to my mail when I'm in the middle of something is annoying. Also I like to check the reviews before updating in case there are issues with updates. Also it's really hard to send photos. Otherwise, I absolutely love the app.
