...was about to sign up for this digital magazine version instead..but after seeing the absolutely terrible reviews, I'm not going to bother. FAIL!
Fix your app Nat Geo...no lame excuses about "new Apple guidelines" What does that even mean?! Why produce a garbage app? May as well not even bother.

Just a useless flow of articles

Version 3.1.0
As others have mentioned this is now a useless app. It doesn’t even have the full content of the magazine, just articles in an endless scrolling format. No more cool interactive content. I’ve had to settle for borrowing digital editions from the library which maintain the layout and flow of the actual magazine.
This is a massive fail for NG as they had a spectacular experience before this new version. Practically speaking: this is now just a web browser; you can get the same experience on the website through Safari.

I like it.

Version 3.1.0
I have purchased every magazine from 2012 to 2018. I have always been able to download and read magazines anytime. Apple keeps a record of every purchase in account. In January 2019, NG made change to the app that is preventing download. This is not fair as I have not finished reading magazines from 2018. Restored app to an older version from 2018 and this allowed downloads until November 2019. Now NG did something that is preventing downloads.
Magazines are purchased like books. NG has no right to prevent downloads of old magazines to read again. This like Apple refusing to allow downloading of books if there is no subscription. I am refusing to subscribe to National Geographic from Apple. The average rating is 1.4 with a lot of people dissatisfied with NG. Ng Keeps blaming Apple for the change. This is not true. Apple never required a change in how magazines are bought and downloaded. I have bought magazines from Apple in 2019 and can still download and read them anytime. NG is an unethical company and should only blame themselves.
On Zinio, I purchased one year of NG in 2011 and can still read them anytime in 2020. I have purchase a couple more single issues in 2019 on Zinio and continue to read them in 2020.

Pull yourself together!

I can’t even sign on. I have had the app for so many years, now I can’t even sign on. I downloaded the app to my new iPhone and it’s ok, but impossible to sign on in my iPad where I have all of “my” magazines. If I delete the app I’ll loose all of my magazines. Really bad move NatGeo, really bad move. So, to have access to “my” digital magazines I need to pay for an eternal subscription or to purchase the “printed” version; so much for the environment. The hypocrisy of money over the planet.

I liked the features that the app used to have. It felt like flipping through a magazine but with some interactive stuff and I enjoyed the puzzles as well. Now it is basically just a website with articles only. Lost the interactive stuff, lost the puzzles, lost the feel. Why bother with the app now, may as well just go to the website. It’s a little boring

It’s shameful that NG has not done anything to fix this app despite all the negative reviews.

No offline support is a big issue. Should be able to save articles and issues to device.
App also doesn’t save position so if you check your messages and go back to the app you have to go back to the article and find where you left off.
These two issues combined causes me not to use the app at all.

Version 3.0.11
*Update: 11 months later*
My subscription renewed a month before National Geographic overhauled the app least year. And now a year later, for the first time in my adulthood, I no longer have a National Geographic subscription. I will happily renew if National Geographic reintroduces a formatted digital magazine, but the current webpage-like layout, with no editorial order or flow makes, the reading experience so unenjoyable I would rather do without (which is extremely sad because I really do enjoy National Geographic magazine).
There seems to be a belief in the digital subscription age that quantity is what makes a subscription special. But that’s not the case. Especially with text-based subscriptions; reading demands undivided attention! I only have so much time and what I pay for when I pay for a magazine is for the editorial team is to curate the best of the best, ranging in breadth of topic and depth of detail so that I can devote what time I have to those beautifully formatted text and breath-taking photography pieces.
But now, photography is an attachment (with many pictures not even visible until you open the album), articles are presented from longest to shortest with no editorial cohesion, and charts, maps, and full-page spreads just don’t exist.
Im broken hearted, but until National Geographic chooses to listen to its customers (and the average 1.4 star review) I will not give them a dime.
***Original review***
To sum up National Geographic’s new overhaul of the app: This is no longer a magazine subscription, it’s an online content subscription.
Which isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s not what I paid for.
I thought, at first, that my subscription wasn’t loading properly, but it turns out there’s just aren't any digital magazines to load. The new format is just individual articles that must be tapped on to be read; just like a webpage. It’s missing all the little bits and bites from the start and end of the print issue that make it a magazine (Your Shot, Letter from the Editor, etc.). And this format also makes it feel like photography is less of a focus for National Geographic now.
Unfortunately my subscription renewed just before the change, so I’m stuck with this for a year. But I am certainly turning off auto-renew and will not be renewing if this update is permanent.
It truly breaks my heart to come to this decision, as I’ve been a cover-to-cover-reading subscriber to this magazine since I was a teen. I’ve also been with the digital edition since day one. I’m not interested in returning to print editions, and will not support the lack of digital editions.
The new app is great, but just bring back the digital, downloadable magazine as part of the app.

If you want to read the National Geographic magazine buy it from the newsstand or open the Apple News app. This app is a Disney-fied version of the magazine, suitable for early readers with pretty pictures. I paid for those magazines and now I do not have any access to them. To me that is theft. I like the magazine but if this is your way you do business I will never ever purchase another magazine or any other item that is related to National Geographic’s ever. I’ve subscribed to National Geographic since I was a child (40 years) and I can’t comprehend the decline of the magazine’s digital experience. I left a review a year ago when the interface changed (for the EXTREME WORSE) and was told then ‘we’ll take your feedback under advisement for upcoming changes’... we’ll what’s happened?? It’s gotten worse. Incomplete articles, lack of navigation ability back to the home screen when in an article, completely incomprehensible interface to understand what’s in the actual paper issue. This app is garbage. I desperately hope I can resist renewing unless it’s improved.

Don’t like this new app at all. No fun to use it. Looks just like any other web articles I can read online anywhere. All the specialness is gone. I’ve been reading the magazine since I’ve been 10. Version 3.0.10
The new app offers a severely degraded user experience compared to the original one. The presentation format does not flow well compared to the magazine, it’s difficult to browse. The app doesn’t retain the last reading position. The image thumbnails are cropped poorly, browsing image galleries is cumbersome and the captions get in the way. It even feels like there is less content in the digital version than the paper, comparing the two is almost impossible so I can’t tell.

If you want to subscribe to the online magazine you can do so from the home screen but the free articles alone are worth this app. I’ve been waiting for National Geographic to come out with an app like this and I couldn’t be happier. Only reason I gave it a 4 star is because I didn’t subscribe to the magazine option and not entirely sure how well that functions.

Version 3.0.9
I am a long time subscriber and was very happy when NG introduced a digital version because I could download the magazines and read on my tablet off line. And also I could resume the reading on the page I left.
But since the new NG app was introduced we can no longer download the magazines, but need to log in to NG site and when I try resuming the reading on the page I left I cannot.
Therefore I have not been reading the magazine since the new app was launched, awaiting for the promise NG has made the download issue would be resolved soon. If the promise is not fulfilled in the very near future I will be unsubscribing the magazine.

I don’t often leave reviews but this latest version is so disappointing that I have to leave and hope that NG will make the simple change.
The latest update does provide a more efficient way to find content but it took away the ability to have the entire magazine in the digital format which means I can’t read NG content without wifi. I changed my NG subscription from print to digital as I found the digital format with multimedia content to be enhanced experience. Sadly, now I am reconsidering switching my subscription for print again! Definitely a step backwards.
