Barron’s used to be one of the best digital reads a serious investor could find. Now it's an ad-driven nightmare. Just like the web site. The app often crashes. It often fails to properly download the weekly edition for offline reading - I suspect because the advertisers don’t want you to read offline because you don’t see their annoying ads. Many links within a story give you an error message and ask you to “try again” ( the definition of madness?). When you click on an image, to make it bigger and more readable, much of the image becomes blacked out. I’ll be cancelling my subscription when it comes up for renewal unless things improve. I am not optimistic.

I have enjoyed reading Barron's for decades. My one, chief concern is in the flashing and moving ads in the digital edition. They truly cheapen the experience and make it intensely annoying. Print subscribers are not subject to anything like this.

The app freezes up continuously. Either the front page stays frozen or you read an article and you can't go to the next page because it's frozen.

I used to use the newsstand reader on my PC which was the actual virtual version of the paper edition. You could highlight and write on the surface and ave the entire edition.
YOU CANNOT DO IT WITH THIS APP
The good thing is it is still the Barron's magazine possibly the best financial news paper for the lay person.

Version 1.2
The end of August brought a surprising and welcome update: Dow Jones has finally updated the Barron's app to support both the retina display of the latest iPad, and the multitasking features of iOS 5! I had truly given up hope and thought the publishers had abandoned the app.
The app now works very well for offline reading of Barron's content (subscription required). It appears that they also fixed an annoying tendency for the app to navigate to the table of contents instead of the next page. I am very happy!
I am rating the app as 4 stars out of 5, because it's good, but not perfect. I notice that the graphics aren't quite "retina" quality (bitmapped text is still fuzzy, etc.), and I think there is room for improvement re: the article navigation bar on the right. It would be better if this could be hidden to allow the article to use the entire screen area.
Overall I can now recommend the app to any Barron's subscriber with an iPad.

Don't understand what holds them from upgrading the app to support Retina Screen. WSJ has done it long time ago. They belong to the publisher.

Version 1.1
The app is designed well, but suffers from a lack of HD. This is noticeable on my older iPad, but really pronounced on the new iPad. The blurry text is just unreadable. I am considering canceling my subscription until an update is made available. Don't waste your money until/if an upgrade comes.

Needs much improvement

Version 1.0
This app needs to improve a lot to make it as accessible as the print version. I would advise that they change the layout so that you start at the cover and can flip through the app in the same way that you flip through the paper. It seems very disjointed having it organized by columns and features etc.
The app should remember your spot when you leave the app and then come back. This is very frustrating, especially if you are in the middle of a longer article. As well, often when I have been in the middle of an article and swipe to continue, it brings me to one of the content pages as opposed to the rest of the article. This is very frustrating.
Also, if you are like me and read Barron's for much of the statistical information, this is incomplete. Much of the Market Data is missing which is frustrating as there are certain things I can't find elsewhere.
I think the developers need to rethink how they present the information through this app. I am not sure to model it after the WSJ makes sense, as they are very different papers.

Great!

Version 1.0
Review update: I am surprised nothing has been done to fix the poor readability of the font and the limited text size options. The more I read issues displayed in this font the more irritating it becomes.
Original review:
Decent app for subscribers. Display needs some more thought. The WSJ app works better. Type size selection is odd. Medium is too small, large too big. Font is also less clear than most other apps, including the WSJ.

Now this is the kind of thing I bought the iPad for. Elegant and simple. Price? Here's where the grin usually turns into a grimace with iPad publications - but not here. The weekly sub is priced about the same as a good cup of coffee.
