What's New in Version 6.1.1

We fixed a bug that caused iPad users to lose their place in a story after leaving the app.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” —Martin Luther King Jr., August 1963 issue

Thank you for your ongoing academic level insight. Canadians feel like cousins to the US, sharing some history and culture, while living in a sparser home where we have to consciously share for survival. Part of our identity is comparing our countries, seeing the emergence of social issues in parallel. I am saddened but hopeful for all of us.

Version 6.0.3
I love everything about the Atlantic, including the brilliant writings you can find in its archives. But for that you need to search in a browser, then enter your credentials in the browser, and... you get it - the entire point of the Atlantic app vanishes.
Pls bring in / build a good search function, we, your readers need it.
5 starts to the Atlantic; and 1 star to its app on a bad day, when the lack of search frustrates me terribly, and causes the type of experience that makes me close the app and move on.

No Search Makes Navigating Painful

 –
jmeelar
 –
2020-04-15
Version 6.0.3
Seriously!? Even magazines have a TOC to help you quickly navigate through the pages. The fact that I can’t search for an author I like, or for keywords to create my own reading lists makes this app extremely frustrating to use. I don’t understand the point of an app that forces you to scroll blindly through information hoping you’ll land on the article you’re looking for. I stopped using it and spend most of my time on the website where I can actually find the stories my colleagues and friends have recommended I read. Don’t waste your time on this app.
UPDATE: I’m tentatively upgrading my rating on the promise of a search function. But I still find it very difficult and time-consuming to navigate. I spend almost all my time on the website instead of the app. I’m curious to see what it means when the developers say they want to “get it right” with search.

You guys are great!

Version 6.0.3
I love the Atlantic. It's a trove of great writing on a wide variety of topics from the natural sciences to geopolitics and lots more. I always learn something reading it and the digital version is very easy to navigate. I think it's an "essential service" (with or without the pandemic).

App Needs some features

Version 6.0.3
I love the Atlantic - I’ve been a subscriber for awhile.
The app is pretty good too, but it really needs a search function. It is so frustrating not to be able to look up articles.
Also, I’d really like FB to link to the app, instead of opening my browser, where I can’t save it / bookmark it, and where there are ads.
Otherwise, it’s a pretty good app.

In need of upgrade

 –
MichiBrais
 –
2020-03-02
Version 6.0.2
The App gives an interesting feed every morning, the writing is easily legible. This is not a critique of the content of the magazine but rather of the app itself. For future upgrades it would useful to have a search feature to find interesting articles, also many links to the articles appear on social media platforms and they send me to the website with no option to open the article in the app. In these cases, it’s really difficult to find the same articles on the App to read them without ads and easily scroll and read.
Also, hopefully there is a tablet app in the making 🤞. There are no other bugs and the app never crashes, it’s just a matter of user friendliness.

Version 6.0
If it’s not broke, don’t fix it
I enjoyed being able to quickly scroll (a few seconds) to see what was new, and what I wanted to read.
Each story seems to be published on a rather large canvas, so to speak, thus the need to keep scrolling.
I miss the quick scan to capture several stories at once; No longer the quick read I would usually choose. Much preferred previous version - please go back

App is energy inefficient

Version 5.1.8
The Atlantic app is the biggest drain on my battery according to my iOS battery diagnostic chart. It consumes more power than the Apple Mail app which understandably needs energy to monitor incoming emails. The Atlantic needs to fix this problem. Soon.

Nice typography but lacks functionality

 –

Version 5.1.3
No search, and can’t save articles for viewing in the app from the website. No way to sort articles, and links to other articles from those in-app load a Safari preview rather than within the app—so, again, can’t save them.
Even though I subscribe the “Subscribe” button is always a feature atop. More annoying than anything.
Otherwise, love the Atlantic, but not a lot of design went into its app.

Version 5.0
This is one of the better news applications on the market in regards to UI. It's clean, simple, and aesthetically appealing. The refreshment was enough for me to renew my expired Atlantic subscription.
The only minor complaint I have is that scrolling through articles on my iPad Pro can be a little buggy at times. That's certainly excusable given the colossal update. Hopefully The Atlantic releases a fix in the not-too-distant future.
A night mode would be warmly appreciated down the road, too.

Version 4.0.1
I downloaded this App to read a specific article in a specific issue. After selecting it and paying for it (and receiving an Apple receipt) the issue did not download. When I went back to the issue, it asked me to pay for it again. No quick response to a bug report. Don't bother with this buggy and unsatisfactory
App.

Don't Do It ! Deletes All Saved Articles

2016-04-08
Version 4.0.1
All your previous 'Saved' Articles and readership history are DELETED when you install this App update. If you are a Print subscriber transitioning to Digital/Print you are wise to wait til the bugs are out.
Poor streamlining and little flexibility, no clear visual path to toggle freely btw. Current monthly ISSUE, individual Article(s), and Archive Issues. Think before you leap.

Needs Work

 –
Sudoku47
 –
2016-03-30
Version 4.0.1
My main criticism is that the interface is confusing. I just want to open it, select an issue of the magazine to read, and get started. But half the time I don't know if I'm in the magazine or an online article, and getting a view of all the magazine issues (covers) is buried under the "Stories" menu.
And if you switch to another app, or walk away for 5 minutes? When you come back you will likely have to navigate your way back to the point in the article you were reading, rather than have the app open where you left off.
So: put the view of all issues as the starting point; make diversions into other online content a sub-feature; and remember where we were in he magazine for when we come back.

That Left, really?

Version 3.7.0
Perhaps the most basic feature in any reading app is the ability of the reader to set type size. How is it that this feature was missed? Also missing is a coherent and intuitive navigation. Is there a search feature? I hadn't noticed. It seems the creators wanted to duplicate a print experience. But why? It would have been better to create a great tablet experience.
