Control an army struggling for survival in the post-apocalyptic world. Choose one of the 4 unique factions—Moloch, Borgo, The Outpost, The Hegemony—and defeat your opponent in tactical warfare. Play solo against an AI opponent or against a human player in an asynchronous cross-platform multiplayer mode.

Neuroshima Hex is a fast paced, tactical game for 1 or 2 players based on the well known tabletop board game by the same name. The game has been published in 8 languages and enjoyed by fans all over the world. Throughout the years, it has been steadily developed by Portal Games, and now offers as many as 19 different armies. In May 2007 Neuroshima Hex was awarded a special jury distinction for the Best Polish Designer Game published in 2006.

Was great

This game was great, then got ruined with later updates. Army packs I’ve paid for are not yet implemented in this new version version, and 3 and 4 player capability is still not implemented after a few years. This was as an exceptional game that has been thoroughly ruined and gutted for no good reason.

Update: ever since the update. It has been years since the update. The armies are slowly coming back. But forever it has been listed that you can only play against 1 AI. It used to allow multiple AI.

Been a big supporter of this game since the beginning and paid for everything, but this app fails to keep up.

"Knife fight in a phone booth"

This is what I read in a review of the NH board game ages ago which convinced me to buy a physical copy of the game more than 10 years ago, and that descriptor stands as true today as it did then.

If you're not familiar with Neuroshima Hex, here's what you need to know:

- it's a heads up, asymmetrical competitive dueling game

- the game is tight and claustrophobic, not a lot of room for mistakes

- it's like a turn-based tactics minis game that's been turned into a "programming puzzle": you'll make tactical decisions turn to turn about positioning and initiative based on the game state and your hand of tiles, but you won't see the results of your decisions until a battle is triggered and the chain reaction of your previous decisions ensues

- the game is asymmetric, so you'll have fun learning the match ups of your favourite faction against the others, adapting your strategy to your opponent's strengths and weaknesses

- because of the puzzle nature of the mechanics, you feel pretty clever when you find the perfect place to play your tiles...

- ...but there's a lot of luck too; if luck isn't on your side, thankfully the game plays fast

Lastly, the developer has been supporting the game for over 10 years - I first played this app on my iPod touch! They've added new armies and most recently rewrote the app from the ground up to support modern devices and the latest OS.

NH is a great game: unique, fun and rewarding.

Downgraded App with Disrespectful Moves

This app used to be amazing, but they decided to swap it out for a totally different one instead of continuing to add things to the old one. Fine. New app was awful, bad. Said they’d slowly add back in the old armies and promised you’d get them ‘free’ if you already paid for them in the old app so that they wouldn’t double charge you. Great. Slowly improving the app to half as good as the old one (at this point). Alright.

Then in the middle of adding in the old armies they add in a brand new one never seen before for $4 or so. Amazing! Price is high, but that’s what the army bundles are for, right? They then stick it in an army bundle with 4 of the old armies for $10 or so. What the heck is that?! So I either way overpay for one new army or have to rebuy armies I already bought and own (and thus way overpay). If it’s a new army, put it in a pack with other new armies! Absolutely awful, and borderline violates their promise that they won’t make us pay for armies twice. And the app is still worse than the old one…

Glad it’s back

It’s good to have a working version of this again. The temporary loss of armies is being addressed, there are 3 so far, and they are free to anyone who owned them previously. The interface is decent, maybe not quite as smooth as before but still fine, and having the unlucky draw rule added in makes up for that. The ai is slower for sure, but Im confident that will improve. Overall I’m just happy to be able to play again, and glad this is in the hands of a developer who is invested in its long term success

Why did you destroy this game?

I don’t understand why this company changed what had been a great port of a board game into an awful app that took away features that players (including me) had paid extra money for. Really, I’d like someone to explain the horrible thought process that went into this.

New version is terrible

This new version has ruined the game for me. Things that are worse with this version: They took away all the armies (adding them back one at a time over months), the AI takes a good 5 seconds for every single move (whereas before it was instant) the actual UI/images are now a lot more difficult to read or identify which unit is which. Games take twice as long to play thanks to the slow AI. Took my favourite digital board game of all time and made it far worse.

Edit: the most recent update has made it completely unplayable. Last game the AI just discarded all its cards for 2 hands in a row once I have good positions on the board. Just broken at this point.

I can’t express how bad this “update” is.

I would pay money to get the old app back. I’m angry that they turned a game I played multiple times a day for the past 6+ years into the this pile of unplayable garbage.

Latest version is unplayable

I’ve been a big fan of a previous version of the game. I played it for 8 or 9 years almost daily. This last version is unplayable. The graphic design is very confusing even to someone like me who knows the game really well. Lots of functionality disappeared. As a previous reviewer I would gladly revert to the previous version if it was possible. It was a good run but in the current incarnation the great game became simply unusable. What a pity.

Totally inferior to the original

First of all you cannot play with more than 2 unlike the previous version. Also as someone who bought into all the armies these no longer seem to be available so you are limited to the 4 base armies which really limits options. There also doesnt seem to be away to check what the tile do unlike the prior version of the game…. Finally the AI is so slow it take much longer to play a game. Seriously restore back the prior version of the game until this is a finished product…. This is garbage.

App hasn’t been updated in years and now hangs on every menu option and is unplayable. It’s too bad, it was a fantastic game and one of my favourites, but until the dev updates the game and makes it usable on iOS 13 it should be removed from the App Store to prevent people from paying for a unusable game.

I bought it to play with my daughter but it turns out the private multiplayer feature has been broken for over a year. Last update was two years ago as of this writing, so devs should fix it or amend the app description.

So, great game but since iPhone got the genius idea to make friend-adding game by game (not through GameCenter), it is impossible to play with my brother. The reason we downloaded the game in the first place was to play head-to-head with him in Canada and me in Korea. Patiently awaiting an update with ability to add GameCenter friends in-app.

As a board gamer

This is one of the best implementations of a board game to app. No issues or crashes. A good choice to digitize because it speeds the game up significantly similar to other heavy calc/setup games like Agricola, Le Havre etc. IAP faction expansions are reasonably priced and helped me choose which physical expansions I wanted to buy for my tabletop copy of NH3.0. Highly recommended!

Great strategy game

A lot of fun to play, smart tile laying game. There's some randomness to it, mainly drawing tiles but the factions are all different and play differently. Haven't purchased the expansions yet but am tempted by it.

Top port for a top boardgame

This is my first time playing the game and its port. I have to say its a lot of fun.

Was Great, Now Insanely Great

UPDATED for v2.0.1: MULTIPLAYER puts this one over the top: The BEST board game on iOS. Everything I loved about NS Hex, brought to the next level. Game mechanics are improved, support units and modifiers now better indicate their effect. Multiplayer is implemented properly, just the way it should be. Realtime games are as fast as Pass-and-Play. Notifications all work, though should be polished with future updates.

The tile placement of Carcassonne mixed with a card-based battle system: what could be better? As soon as it was released, I played this game nonstop for months, unlocking as many achievements as I could. The AI is very cunning, and improved with v2.0.1.

The two new armies available via IAP bring a whole new level of complexity. It's fun to learn the strengths and weaknesses. Totally worth $0.99 each! Hopefully the Steel Police will be the next army available as an IAP!

Addictive game made better

I bought this game before it was added to to the Game room collection and modified with leaderboards and achievements. It just became even more addictive, in the true spirit of pick-up-and-play games.

My pusher guy in the ny army can't push and when I try to game usually glitches shortly there after

Also just last game my night shade was going to attack the borgo hg he had two mess attached and then got shot down in phase four by a gunner my night shade just died and both meds stayed

Also might wanna clear up some rules a bit

Mods can be attached to roots in the since of increasing the motherland

Also if an enmy tile is on your roots and you attack it while having med mods on your motherland the mods will disappear and save the enemy

Not sure if it's spider to do that but it does

Being a fan of simple strategy board games (chess, checkers, go, etc.), NS Hex delivers in all respects while adding something new and extremely innovative to the mix.

Fresh and pure fun, I cannot stress enough how great it is to have the option of playing 4 players (an option heavily lacking in most games). The game's 4 factions need praising, it keeps the simplistic formula shaken up for veteran players whilst adding another layer of strategy when considering each factions attributed benefits. The rules at first seem heavy but this is only an illusion, with just a little patience you can learn to play in just one practice game and easily teach others how to play with you.

If this sounds like the type of game you enjoy, then I guarantee 100% that it is!

Great game, needs stats

This would be a 5 star game except it does not even track your win/loss record.

Edit: update introduced stats that are pointless with a leaderboard that rewards quantity of play over quality. Game is now tracking wins for silly achievements but you STILL have no access to a win/ loss record!

A lot of fun

Played it a bit on iPad at 2x now that its full screen, it's even better. Takes a while to understand all the symbols and the factions but that's what gives it depth and replayability. Well done!
