For Beginners and Up!

If you are an absolute beginner, it will be frustrating at first. Maybe finish a few beginner lessons on a free app. Then, jump right into LingQ. Buy a month and give it an honest effort. It is so worth it.

Good but not great

It’s an alright app for learning I find the content is limited as well as a few things that need changing which should be very simple and common sense. Over all I do enjoy the app but it is definitely not the only source you should rely on.

The best language learning app

The best language learning app I’ve encountered so far. Amazed at he progress I’ve made on French in just two weeks compared to what was essentially zero progress made in the years I was taught it in grade school, or all the hours I spent on Duolingo.

Update to Update: Get This App If You Are Serious About Language Learning

Having used LingQ for some two years I am re-upgrading my ranking. This tool is more useful and better value than any other out there. I use it ever day. I have a Lifetime Subscription for my study language, Portuguese. I believe that you get what you pay for.
Overall this is a very good app, and the concepts behind it are valuable for language learning. In terms of what offers, it is very ambitious and aims to be comprehensive.
Its core strength is enhancing reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. It empowers learners by getting them to chose the materials they want to read, study, and learn from.
It does have a fairly steep learning curve, and I am still getting the hang of some parts; there are parts I haven’t looked at very much. I have figured out some of the things I found puzzling, and have started using the Playlist feature, and now listen while driving.
I do think that if you are serious about language learning this is the strongest single app you can find, and it potentially can take you a long way if you are motivated and persistent. I took out a subscription to focus seriously on the one language I am most interested in

Veru useful app

This app is very useful and beneficial for language learning. It makes reading and listening to language material “above your pay grade” a vastly easier and more enjoyable experience, and overall, vastly improves your efficiency for learning your target language. Wish this had been around when I was learning Arabic 15 years ago.

Great tool with some warts

Great tool for efficient learning by immersion. It took some extended experimentation to fully appreciate its value. It offers very compelling and unique functionality compared to other more popular, polished, and often overly cutesy apps. LingQ won’t immediately hook you the way an app with amazing interaction design does, but makes up for it with powerful tools and content for dedicated polyglots.
Make sure you also install the desktop browser import extension so you can review imported articles on your phone / pad.
Details:
The LingQ function forces all text to lower case. German nouns are capitalized - the app should let you preserve case.
Also, languages like German inflect nouns according to gender and grammatical case. You must learn the gender and irregular plural forms when learning a new word, or else you cannot fully integrate it into your own speech. Similarly, prepositions invoke grammatical cases, and you need to know which case that is.
Given that LingQ supports a range of thorough professional dictionaries, it has access to these important aspects of a word, but it doesn’t extract them for you. You can use the tags feature to add the details manually, but the app should automate this step. Once it’s a tag, you can check it in the app’s vocabulary review mode by tapping the edit button (an automatic progressive disclosure feature for revealing tags would be better).
The LingQ app itself has somewhat klunky interaction design, the graphic design is not stellar, and it forgets settings. Each time I log into the app, I have to reset some settings it can’t seem to remember past the current session. When exploring translations for a LingQ in one of the many dictionaries it supports, a page with a blue title bar pops up with the translation. It took me a while to figure out I could leave the page without killing the app, because the cancel button text is blue too - I found it accidentally with random taps and then realized oh, two indistinguishable shades of blue, why would you do that? As for graphic design - I don’t need an app to be cutesy, but after using apps like Duolingo, Memrise, Babbel, and Busuu, LingQ comes across a little home brewed and cluttered.
One can work around these warts but at a $10 / month subscription price, a 4.5 product should show more polish. The owner of the company should focus his energy on delivering a better product rather than trashing every competing language app, tool, software, course, and book available in his rambling videos.
I like that I can select phrases for translation, and for text-to-speech of imported articles. In fact, LingQ should offer the play audio function for imported article and invoke TTS - I can only invoke it after selection.
Example of how it helped: I knew “laut” means loud in German, but I didn’t know “laut + ” means “according to.” I struggled with a sentence from an imported news article until I selected the whole phrase for translation. Then suddenly I could grok the original sentence and experienced that magical bliss of linguistic comprehension.

Lingq app

For those who love to learn languages by reading, lingq is a great resource to make it easy to read interesting material and to build up vocabulary in a desired language. It uses a great method to keep identifying unknown words and to systematically work at learning more and more of them as proficiency in the language increases.

the best system I've used

Great update: I find sentence mode quite useful for the first few times through a challenging text.
Le wow! I've used many different systems and websites--all very helpful--and am now an intermediate/advanced student of french. This system is perfect for language acquisition, especially the links: words that we are learning that are highlighted in any lesson, so that we can see them again not just as an isolated word but in multiple contexts. This and the combination of text plus audio is unbeatable. Repeated listening and reading is the key to language acquisition. Add to that the act of actually speaking the language (I haven't tried their learning communities yet) and you have everything you need.
Learning a language takes time and effort. I can now converse with a francophone for hours but am continuing to learn and am just beginning Spanish with this app.
Highly recommend.

Do not get this App

This App is very difficult to use. It is not intuitive or user friendly. But the absolute worst part, is that cancelling the App is extremely difficult! After figuring out how to cancel and canceling before the 1 week trial was up , they still charged me! I’m extremely upset! This is exactly how people get used and abused! This App should be shut down. It is fraudulent!

Optional romanization please

This is a useful tool, but putting in romanized versions of words underneath Asian characters on the flash cards was an awful idea. Please at least add a way to turn them off. It's basically like having the answer in plain view the moment the flashcard shows up. I literally have to try and cover up that part of the screen with my hand if I want to learn anything.

Very buggy and unusable

I love LingQ and the method they use! I use the website all the time to learn German.
But their mobile app is not very good:
- words in flashcards get cut off so you can't read them.
- The app logs you out every few days or weeks.
- the latest update doesn't load any of my courses at all!
- if you click the "listen" button in flashcards mode, you sometimes accidentally reveal the answer. The button is too small.
- The app is very slow to load. Interacting with words doesn't refresh very quickly.

Quality control on this apllication seems non-existant. The software developers should get some training in quality control!!! I am scared to do updates, for fear that that each new verdion breaks things that used to work. Too bad, because the concept is great!

Not very satisfying

I downloaded this app because the internet version wouldn't let me edit writing for exchange requests on my phone. But the app doesn't even have the exchange. It also doesn't have cloze tests, which are my favourite way of learning vocabulary, or multiple choice tests. In the lessons, I had a problem as well - there seemed to be no way to mark a word as known. I am very disappointed and will be deleting this app.

Great start, needs a few tweaks to make it even better!

I love using this app.
One wonderful thing is that it automatically adds your lessons on the phone once you have added them to your library.
The play lists are also great so you can listen for a long time without having to navigate.
There is room for improvement though.
1. I would like to pause the audio from the locked iPhone screen by double clicking the home key. Right now, I double click, the phone recognizes that it is playing an iLingq audio, however the pause key does not work.
2. I'd like to highlight words I don't understand in the txt. Not necessarily look them up, but at least mark them so I can look them up and creat Lingqs in the future. If we could creat the Lingqs , that would be even better, however small improvements here would be appreciated!
3. Finally, I'd like to create play lists more easily. Either on the website and download to the phone, or by marking multiple lessons at a time to add to a play list!
Thank you for your hard work!
