Description

Family tree research is becoming an ever more popular past time. Normally all of your genealogy information is locked away on your computer at home which isn't much use when you are out and about researching local records, or visiting locations such as graveyards, ancestral homes, or family reunions.
This is where GedView comes in. Carry around your entire family tree on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad and have all the data about your ancestors and even current descendants at your fingertips.
You can quickly check up on family relationships, dates / locations of events, and record new information. Despite the name GedView is not just a viewing tool. This includes taking photos, or video anywhere and anytime you like without needing to worry about a potentially costly internet connection. If using an iPhone, or a cellular enabled iPad you can even record your current location to add to any event.
If your tree contains lots of images you can even use GedView as a slideshow, showing all the pictures related to a given event, person, source, family. You can also play back any home movies you have in your tree. Media support is not limited to photos/video. Support is also included for any other file type your iPhone, iPod, or iPad is capable of opening. This may be PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, mp3 files. If you have an app installed that supports a specific document type and have a document of that type in your tree you will be able to view it via GedView.
Do you have some separate branches in your tree that you haven't connected yet? GedView allows you to store multiple trees so you can easily switch to view distinct branches.
Unlike other apps no specific computer application is required, nor is a subscription to any website. Instead standard GEDCOM files can be imported, These can be encoded as ASCII, ANSI, ANSEL, UTF-8, or UTF-16 and can be added to GedView via WiFi, downloading from a website, via iTunes, or even opened from other apps such as Mail, Safari, Dropbox etc.
While GedView is targeted towards GEDCOM 5.5.1 it will read in any version, and will also support many custom extensions used by other genealogy applications, and because GEDCOM hasn't been added as an after thought imports are fast and efficient.
You can even export GEDCOM files for sharing with family members or other researchers, or to transfer new information to your main computer.
A sample family tree containing the British monarchy is included.
If you have any problems, or suggestions please get in touch via the support email address.

What's New in Version 4.2.9

Fixes import of names where a surname formatted as per GEDCOM specification is not present, the name will now be treated as a given name rather than a surname.
Fixes potential error when importing names where either a surname and a given name are not provided.
Fixes problem viewing source citations / sources that do not contain any fields.
Updated user manual covering additional settings.
Added setting to control where notes/media from older format Source records appear, either the current behaviour of applying to the citation record, or when enabled applying to the source record.

Impressive Family Tree App!

I'm finding this app rather useful for viewing the GED I exported from Family Tree Maker. I especially like the way it will show a map of birth locations and its search capability.

Works Great

Would have gone 5 stars but there is one little problem. When I try to view descendants, with quit a few it bounces me back to the start screen, like right out of GedView.

Wow!

Loved this on my iPad, now really love it on my phone. This is the only app I ever paid for and have not regretted it. Thank you so much Mr. Knight, you have made my genealogy so much easier to work with.
This app is not just for when you are away from home either. I use it to look at multiple individuals while I'm on my PC using my genealogy software.
Love that I can access multiple trees with minimal hassle!

Finally a GEDCOM viewer!

Very nicely done! Exported my Family Tree Maker 2006 data to GedCom format and imported it to iPhone via my home WiFi in seconds. All my data (~800 individuals including extensive notes) seems to have transferred perfectly. Has a good password feature so that your data will not be accessible to anyone who picks up your phone. Locations are clickable and bring up a map--very nice! Also has a good little graphical tree view for pedigree although it did crash the program once (hence only 4 stars in my rating) although the problem has not been repeated. I had waited and asked for an app like this for my Blackberry for 3 years but no one could oblige. Nice to have an iPhone + this app as it will make it easy to check my data when out and about. Many thanks to the programmer, great job!l

Brilliant!!!

Excellent App. I downloaded a Gedcom file from Legacy 7.5. Navigation between detail, pedigree, and ancestor views is a breeze. Screen layouts and content are excellent. Down load of Gedcom is a little tricky, but the help was sufficient to get it done. I am using this strictly to view the Gedcom contents.

Nice app

I have only had this programme running for less than a day. So far I have no issues. It downloaded and installed quickly. Loading the Gedcom file from an email was super fast and easy once I figured out how to do it. Read the manual;). I have my research and data on a laptop computer. I would not want to work primarily from a phone or IPod etc. So this works well as a handy mobile reference. I think that to expect more is impractical. I have over 5,000 names now and no glitches so far. I would like to see more tree options, especially direct descendancy and compression of the existing tree. The family group sheet also displays initially in the corner oft screen. Full screen would be nicer. I would give this a five but not until I see further refinement. All in all a nice little app.

Fun while it lasted...

I only had this App on my phone, not on my computer... For people who are new at this, a warning would help. Last updated erased everything, need to start over. Boo :-(

Fine APP

I found this little app ideal for my family tree of 1300 individuals.
I use Family Tree Maker 2011 on my computer and GED View stores a copy in only 475 kb. It's fully searchable sand will be a great asset on genealogical field trips.
Thanks for a great app.

Still has some bugs but getting better

I've added another star since the last release and my last review.
It is now possible to create family trees as a standalone app. As far as I can tell, this is unique on the iPhone if you also want to be able to export your work to desktop apps on a PC.
The sexes of the people in the tree still change on their own when you edit other data. There's bug in the program that makes me nervous.
There's a tree view feature in the manual but I can't seem to get it to work. Might be me...
The list of what should come next is very long but my immediate requests would be:
- the ability to attach pictures to people
- auto calculation of ages
- relationship names between people in an easier way
- import, export, or sync info from the iPhone contacts database per individual
Keep working on this. I think there's a lot of potential here.
Or, if the competition would unlock their apps from their Mac apps, that would work too...
Thanks.

Needs help file

When I first downloaded the program it took a while to figure out, since there no instructions. But it's a good program and does what it's suppose to. I wish it could import pictures then it would be worth five stars.

Up and Going with my GEDCOM loaded within minutes of loading app to my iPhone!

This app is extremely well priced considering the features and ease of use. I'm not exactly clear how you can add marriages to the existing people, but I'm sure I'll figure it out shortly.
I found the load of my GEDCOM file to be extremely easy.

Useful to view gedcom file on the go.

The gedcom file was easy to import to my iPod touch over WiFi; it uses your computer's browser for this. The data is easy to navigate, although as advertised it shows only parents and children, so going up many generations takes some time. Haven't figured out what the bookmark option is for; the program closes when I press some of the buttons.

Love it

Very hard to import gedcom, but excellant support. Maps are great; unique even. Linking to contacts/pics would be nice.
Dick Eastman wrote excellant reviews, but all these apps are first gen.
