Ridiculously fantastic

I use this app everyday as I learn Japanese. I would be at a loss without it. It’s beyond useful for quickly searching vocabulary in English or Japanese and you don’t even need an internet connection. Cheers to you guys for making a stellar app, thanks!

Would be perfect with an export to Anki...

This app is good but it is ruined by the fact that you cannot export to Anki... the embedded SRS is not convenient nor as good as Anki.

Amazing

This app is so useful, well organized and easy to break down. As someone who has learned other languages before starting to learn Japanese I couldn’t ask for more. It seems like it would just as useful to a beginner as it would be to someone who has spent years studying Japanese. I especially like the idiomatic phrases section and how words are categorized into different topics such as “art” or “agriculture”. It makes it very easy to learn in a way that is suited to the learner. If you use this app all that’s left is to practice speaking and listening. I’m so excited to use this app and can’t wait to travel to Japan soon and actually be able to read, write and speak the language instead of just knowing tourist survival phrases like “where is the bathroom”. It makes my dream of teaching there seem much more attainable since I have such a good tool to overcome the language barrier I currently face.

Better than any dictionary!

The sheer volume of info on each word--especially examples and conjugations of verbs--and the built-in study feature are amazing. Far better than any paid apps or physical dictionaries I've bought for Japanese!

I would give it a 6 stars if I could

only 1 thing I wish I could change (would be nice to have the option) is to remove the examples which would allow more space for notes (I like to put compounds) even more since the examples are often too complex for the kanji level... but amazing app 👍

INCREDIBLE app

Just moved to Japan and this is my husband and I’s #1 app for studying and learning and helping us out in those “I can’t remember that word” moments.

There is no better Japanese learning app out there. It’s a blessing that it’s free. I would easily pay money for this.

Why can’t they have a Chinese version

This app is amazing. Has everything I need. The design is breathing. Maybe add a self-tracing feature, where you practice writing the characters with the studying feature? Doesn’t matter, already 5/5 maybe 10/5 if I could. Now all I’m missing is a Chinese version of said app. That would be a dream come true.

Great context examples

The two greatest features of this app:

1) the 50 or so example sentences it gives with every word.

They are taken from real native writings so the usage is contextualized naturally.

2) the randomized vocabulary it displays on the home screen.

It’s surprising how often a word I learn from this feature ends up appearing to in my immersion media

Comprehensive dictionary with lots of extra tools for learning, like lists, labels, and study cards for JLPT. I wish it would sync my custom lists between iPhone and iPad via iCloud.

Note to developer: thanks for the reply. I would never have guessed there were options hidden in the progress bar; it needs to be much more obvious. By the way, I didn’t say you “copied RTK”. I was talking about Remembering the Kanji (the book, not the app — the book is obviously not a copy of your app, since it has existed since 1977), and my point was that your app can not be used as flash cards for RTK, since it doesn’t show the correct keywords from the book. It’s not important to me, as I’m no longer doing RTK. But it would be nice for those who are still learning Kanji using that method.

Best Japanese App Available

As a Canadian who lived abroad in Japan for a year, I spoke a medium to advanced level of Japanese. This app saved my life. It is efficient and provides you with the means to search for vocabulary and Kanji quickly. It has the best usability and provides a great amount of detail and tools for continuing your Japanese education. I’ve tried almost every Japanese app available and this is by far the best.

It has everything I need for my Japanese learning. It provides different forms for verbs, which is super nice. Only two things for the developer: 1. Please add voice, I think even Google translate does a very good job on the voices. Maybe they have API you can borrow 2. Please fix UI and handwriting problem for iOS 11. Big support!!!!!

Go-to dictionary

This is my go-to dictionary for Japanese. I always recommend it to friends because it incorporates the tanaka corpus for most definitions, so you can see natural uses of most of the word entries.

Fantastic

This dictionary is the most complete I've ever seen on a mobile device and it helped me a lot through learning Japanese ! The only thing I'd like to appear in the app is a functionality to improve kanji (and maybe kana) writing, with the stroke order and automatic feedback. For the rest, it's perfect !

Awesome Japanese dictionary app

I have been studying Japanese for years now and this app is the one that I keep coming back to again and again. It is intuitive and doesn't take much learning to use it effectively. The hand-writing option is super for looking up kanji and for practicing them. If you only have enough to buy one dictionary app, I would highly recommend this one.

Best $8 I spent

This app was $8 when I bought it and I don't often download paid apps, but this was easily the best 8 bucks I've ever spent on an app and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I've been living and working in Japan for about 9 months now and when I came here I had next to no knowledge of the Languge. This app has been my trustee study companion for the past 9 months and will be long into the future.

It does need to be updated though. It has a few small bugs/design flaws that should be addressed, as others have pointed out.

Best Japanese app; desperately needs update

Hands down the best app for anyone learning Japanese. But the app never stays in its session when you leave the app, and there are many tiny UI elements that's buggy in my iPhone 6s. Needs to be updated.

Tried many similar programs (Japanese dictionary, word lists, etc.). I stopped searching in 2010 (I think) once I bought this app. Exactly what I was looking for, well thought out and well made software.

If I switch to another app while doing a search, it resets back to the opening screen. Makes this useless for searching for kanji on safari, for example.

Will not start after upgrade

I have used this app for years but after the last update it crashes every time you try to open it. The website for support offers no way to contact the author to report problems. Very disappointed. Beware until this is resolved.

Very helpful

This app comes in very handy. Especially the fact that you can search the conjugated form of a verb and get its plain form easily. I also like that if you search a kanji you get a number total for how many entries use that kanji or its variant pronunciations. 5 star quality app!
