Welcome to the new 511 Alberta app.
The 511 Alberta mobile app provides real-time road and traffic information to Alberta drivers. Construction, congestion, and other delays are centrally monitored by the many cameras, sensors, and other data available to Alberta Transportation. Our 511AB app will help you plan your route, anticipate delays, and get where you're going faster.
New Version Information
The new 511 Alberta includes a completely new app which will require a new installation.
This app features a scrollable, zoomable map that displays:
- Road Conditions
- Incidents, such as collisions and other road hazards
- Over 200 Cameras, frequently updated so you can see the conditions for yourself
Other features of the app include:
- Route Comparison, enter a destination and get 3 routes with travel times displayed
- Route Schedules, you can save a route and set a daily time to have the app run that route before you leave so you can receive automatic notifications
- Drive Mode Alerts, you can just start driving with the app on and you will be notified with an audio alert of any delays on the road ahead of you
- Citizen Reporter – submit audio reports to the 24/7 Traffic Management Centre (TMC) for issues and conditions that you experience on your route

511 Alberta
Great for checking road conditions before your trip or during with road cameras to view along your route can help you plan your safest fastest way to get where you need to go.
TIP: take 10 or 15 minutes to fill in your information and customize the settings. Get to know it before you need it otherwise you will be frustrated and wah wah. Things seem to work a lot better with the helpful hints added. Safe journeys & “make sure that your shiny side is always up.”

The biggest beef is using pink, or salmon, for snow covered and red for closed. It really does need another colour fir snow covered.

Poor app!!! Old app was better!
The new app is poorly updated. There’s an accident on there that says road closed and it’s been cleaned up and moved for over 12 hours. You can’t tap on the road anymore to see when the conditions where updated last. I can no longer depend on 511 Alberta for accurate road information. The old app was easier to use and was way more informative.

Terrible
I’m from out of province. Terrible app. Earlier version from 2 years ago was better. All I want to know is what the conditions are at a glance. Saskatchewan’s Highway Hotline is what 511 used to be like. Very frustrating to navigate.

I already have a GPS app. I needed an app that would give me the road conditions, as the old version did very well. This one does not. Go with AMA.

Good app but would be better with a couple of improvements
I am using this app all the time during the winter months and am generally very pleased with updates etc. My biggest issue is though that the “covered” is pink and the “closed” is red and on the app on my phone it’s quite hard to distinguish between those colours, they are way too similar! Also it would be great if smaller highways could hear part of this app, not only the major ones. Ie highway 519 and similar sized highways.

Brilliant App
Love the latest update to the App. The ability to do check everything from my phone makes this a must have travel companion. With every release it just gets better and better. Your twitter account also rocks, I know of no other gov account that keeps us safe by answering our questions 24/7.

Preferred the older version
I definitely preferred using the older app. Like others the ability to see when road conditions were updated is handy. I’m not a fan either of the incidents or road work being read aloud (without an option to turn the feature on/off).

Deleted app
I had this app in the old version, I loved it then. But with the new version you can no longer tap on the roads to see when they were last updated, when you tap on the camera it no longer tells you road temp, both which are available online and therefore should be on the app.
With no road temps and the inability to see when info was updated this app is pretty much useless, especially when it can be over 6 hours between updated road info.

Confusing
I’ve been using 511 Alberta for about 3 or 4 years as I’m always on the highways and I love being able to see what my trip looked like ahead of time. Alot has been done to improve the app but now it’s just extremely confusing and almost too much of a headache to even use. sometimes I just want to check the cameras and have the road conditions right there when you open the app and not have to enter the destination and figure it out from there... sometimes simple is better especially when you have a lot of older people that don’t know technology very well!

New update is a hit and miss
The new look of the app seems nice and the map scrolls smoothly but there are quite a few bugs making the app less usable than the old one.
For example, clicking on an an incident on the highway (accident for example) it starts an audio playback describing the incident, even if your phone is set to silent. And there’s no way to stop the audio or even pause it other than force-quitting the app. Go into setting? Sure, except there’s nothing there to adjust. So be very careful using this app in a meeting or other noise sensitive spaces.

Looking for road conditions? Use website not app
No detailed information on road conditions. Not even a legend. Just another GPS app that can feed warnings while driving. Completely useless for looking at road conditions for trip planning. Use 511.alberta.ca for that.

Good app
I like the voice command option to access saved routes when driving.
The map loads quickly and I can use the legend option to customize what I need to see such as roadwork, accidents, highway quality.

Terrible app bring back the old
This app is absolute junk. Not user friendly at all. Hard to navigate. Can’t find the legend for the road conditions. Can’t scroll to see the map without putting in a destination. Also what happened to the snow plow tracker? This upgrade is a huge disappointment and really scary to think this is what we have going into winter.

Why fix what isn’t broken? This new format is not ok. Let’s have the old format back. I counted on this app in the winter for highway driving. Please fix it!! Prior to this new platform the app was easy to navigate with an excellent layout. I can’t even find the information that I need there now. Argh!

App can’t be used on iPad. Needs to be iPad friendly. Old app worked on all devices. Not a fan of the new app on my iPhone.

In order to post I have to select a star but I don’t think the new app deserves any stars. I have to say I wish I hadn’t downloaded the new app. The old app was way easier to use, I haven’t figured out yet how to see the map view of the road conditions. Used to be able to see if the highway was in good or poor condition and then look at the cameras closest to me.
