So happy I discovered this app. Use it on every trip into the backcountry for planning and navigation. Can’t beat it

Version 2020.9
This is a great topo map app. It could improve by having additional campsite or trail names as right now many are “unnamed campsite” etc. An option to label these would be helpful.

Best off-line GPS app I’ve found

Version 2020.9
Very user-friendly and accurate off-line (with subscription) navigation app. The integration with their website and Apple CarPlay makes trip planning and travel a breeze. My only complaint is that when synced with Apple CarPlay the direction of travel arrow is too big and obscures too much of the map, not good if you’re watching for an upcoming turn. Otherwise it would get 5 stars from me.

Works great but data management is a mess

Version 2020.9
Just try to organize your tracks etc. Photos are displayed nicely in the app but downloading is a pain and the images lose all georeference information. Premium version should have much better data management options.

Version 2020.8
I’m out exploring in the bush a lot, I have been using GAIA GPS for a couple of years now and I can’t imagine going rideabout without it. With a couple of basemaps (OpenCycleMap being a must!) and satellite imagery handy for offline use, navigation is taken care of. So more time to enjoy the outdoors... thanks for your hard work on this excellent app!

Version 2020.7
Can’t print from app, web version can’t control grid sizing during print. It’s a decent app for seeing where you are. Not capable for serious route planning since you can’t make serious prints. Maybe hikers and backpacking are not the demographic they’re going for but the explore page kinda seems like it is?

Premium not worth it in Canada

Version 2020.7
Great app but the premium pricing is not appropriate. The mid tier doesn’t give you anything and you have to get the highest tier, which has a lot of content but for the USA.
If everything available to Canada was available to the mid tier, then it would be worth it and I would continue my subscription.

Version 2020.7
What’s with the “i” button right under where my thumb touches the screen? I’m sick of accidentally activating it. The picture here in the App Store is where it was. It’s not there now. Please put it back there or put it in settings.

Version 2020.7
After 4 years premium membership, I cannot see any real improvement in the map quality. The satellite images are old, covered in snow or cloud, or not zoomable. The competition provides 3D satellite and topographic maps of Canada in high detail for lower cost. The route tools on the iPad are lacking, which forces one to go onto a desktop. Seems all the improvements are realized for US customers.

Version 2020.5
Paid for a year premium but find the app unusable as my position indicator stays at one position than jumps about every 10 seconds. All other mapping apps are working fine. If you reset your iOS device it starts to work fine for about a day .
Has potential but certainly not the way it works now.
Have been in contact with the developer and they are aware of the problem.
Just felt this review was justified as you don’t want to drop money and find the app unusable.
Will update my review once this issue has been rectified.

Amazing app.

Version 2020.4
I’ve been using Gaia GPS for quite sometime now and I really like the improvements over the years. For quick response if I need any kind of help. I have used it for work and leisure. Never once let me down. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Areas to improve (Knick picking) is the folders. It’s a bit confusing and slightly cluttered. Could have more of a basic layout. Also would like to see An option to use mils or degrees while navigating. Other than that, it’s my favorite gps app and will continue paying for premium.

Horrid.

Version 2020.3
If you want a program to let you down in the field and embarrass itself in front of friends and clients, here’s the ticket.
Unusable, takes “outsmarting” the app to get tracks loaded. Sometimes it’s just straight quicker to give up and load them in another GPS program. Seriously.
Also nice work having literally zero satellite maps without paying. Apple Maps is free you guys.
I would rather use paper.

I have a mixed experience

Version 2020.2
I had it for a year and at first loved it for backcountry skiing around whistler, BC
Then used it for hiking around Squamish, BC and it proved untrustworthy (it was very confused about its location.) The map line it drew was like a 3 year old drawing a wind storm!
It gives you a general area but not accurate enough to be trusted.
I stopped using it, then got an email saying it will auto renew, tried to stop it to no avail.
I sent an angry email; a day later got a response and a refund.
On that, I’m very impressed!

I downloaded this app in hopes of navigating trails in Taiwan. The trails were there but everything was in Taiwanese. No issue if you can read Chinese but it would be helpful if there was a setting that allowed for translation to the language of your choice. For this reason I chose another app to use.

Canada is often forgotten about in mapping platforms, but not with Gaia. Thank you. I use Gaia for overlanding and hiking. Their Canadian Topos are great. I've upgraded to the premium edition for access to the Backroad Mapbook layers. Logging and forest fire overlays for British Columbia are a nice edition too. I like that I can build custom maps with opacity layering and download what I need when I'm out of cellular range. Works great on my iPad 4 that's 8 years old. I was happy to learn I didn't need an external GPS receiver as my iPad has cellular capability (and no active plan / sim required).
I've tried almost every ios mapping software as well as Garmin handheld, and Gaia on an iPad is by far my favorite.
Love that it syncs with my online account and iPhone. And sharing maps with friends is fantastic. And the fact that I can upload photos taken after the fact, and it places them on the map in the location they were taken. Fantastic app. Well done.

I use GAIA almost every weekend and holiday for mountain biking, hiking and off-road adventure motorcycling in BC. It has all the functionality I need and basically eliminates the need for an expensive stand alone unit. Between GAIA and the downloaded free and Backroad Mapbook layers it’s all I need. Highly recommend.

I was told that gps apps didn’t work in the Cotswolds in England when I went walking there last March. Well, surprise, Gaia worked just fine! In fact, having it along saved lots of confusion dealing with the old ordinance maps the tour people supplied me with. Once back in North America I have been mapping some old logging roads in the local hills and once again Gaia GPS has come through for me with over 100 kms of tracks saved already. Maybe you might have some issues due to your particular gps usage, but for my needs I am sold on Gaia!

I’m only giving 1 star because of the requirement to create an account before seeing anything about how this app works. I am reluctant for several reasons. First, With all the security and privacy issues Facebook has seen this year, I refuse to login with their credentials for fear of all of my personal information leaking out, as has been well documented lately. Secondly, until I have thoroughly tried out an app and decided to upgrade to a “pro” release in order to share data across multiple devices, I don’t need to create an account. I am quite happy having everything local for now.
Please remove this restriction and really allow people to try the app first. This app has been reviewed favorably by several websites, but would get more if you would open it up and allow people to test it for themselves.
