Current Version (3.41.0) is terrible.

Interactions within the app went from silky smooth to clunky and laggy - trying to turn scenes on and off is difficult to do accurately now even and most of the time you wind up clicking into the scene setup. Very poor update and a month is too long to have suffered with it already guys.

Away From Home Control REMOVED

“ Away-from-home control and Home & Away will no longer be supported.” - June 22, 2020 update
Philips Hue became useless to me now that I no longer can manually control my lights when I’m not home. What a shame. Should give back the money to all the clients who bought this product specifically to use this feature.

Problems

The current version of the app is not running routines and losing their name. Also it is turning on some lights at night when there is no routine set up at all for them. I’m very disappointed now.

Great system, app developing defects and poor performance.

Updated app is slow. This app has suddenly added delays, hiccups and interface pauses that weren’t there before.
I’ve got no real problem with the current limitations - though I agree that multi-bridge would be nice. I have a feeling they’re ignoring that to sell is a more capable bridge.
That said, the app performance has gone down the drain - what happened? It was so smooth and slick before.
Hue also desperately needs a guest mode where certain users can access the lights but not modify the configuration - especially important for homes that take advantage of motion sensors, routines, formulas and more where many lights might not longer have switches.

Homekit sync issues

Every time I open up the hue app it messes up my HomeKit setup. Is there something I’m doing wrong? Now, when I want to change something in HomeKit I make sure to change it in the hue app. Or else all hell breaks loose.
Hue really needs to add an option to prevent this. How about just not effing up my hone kit settings. That be great thanks.

Fix this app or I won’t buy another bulb!

Try the iConnect app for hue. It’s not free but it works brilliantly. A 2.4 user rating should tell you everything you need to know about this app. I’ve owned hue lights since the first generation. This is the worst software ever written. Hue had better get there act together and create an app that’s actually useable. I can honestly say for the first time I’m sorry I ever bought these very expensive lights if this is the best Phillips could come up with for an app. C’mon guys you can do better than this. Absolutely TERRIBLE.

Disappointed in this app. It won’t recognize its own branded Philips Hue devices, even with the device serial number. Connectivity is unstable. It prompts for firmware updates, but gives connection errors.

Weak link in the smart home ecosystem

Philips recently updated this app so that it overwrites literally destroys the configurations you make in the Home app. It will overwrite rooms and devices without discretion. For example, if I use Apple’s Home app to set up a new room, move a Philips Hue bulb into it, move an August lock into it, move a Mysa thermostat into it and add some automations, then open the Hue app - BOOM, the Hue app will delete that room, delete the automations, and orphan all of those devices, undoing all of my efforts. It’s brutal. It’s really sad because the Hue app used to work really well with Apple’s Home app. I can’t understand why Philips decided to force users to use only its app and to drop support for syncing like other HomeKit apps. I’ve decided to look for alternatives to Hue produces since it represents such a huge risk to my smart home configuration.

Not Stable apps

I have owned many indoor and outdoor lights and accessories, I have programmed each light for certain routine. Troubles are sometimes certain group of light will work and don’t, making it useless. With over $1k of gears, the apps need a lot of attention and stable!
I would not invest in Philip Hue unless this apps bugs free!

You broke widget functionality

In the past month or so, the widget functionality has changed. Once you long press the home screen icon to invoke the widget and select a scene, it opens the app. The whole purpose of the widget is that you DON'T end up opening the app (nor do you have to exit it), so if this is a deliberate change, the logic is baffling. Please fix.

Great Light Control but

Love having control over my lights and atmosphere - But! None of my hard worked out scene settings are synced to all of my devices. Everything set up to perfection on my iPhone but when I access Hue from my iPad, my 2nd iPhone, 2nd iPad it’s all lost. It would seem like it should be a given considering everything else syncs across my devices.

After all this time. Still doesn’t work.

After all this time I still can not use my voice to control scenes. I go to Siri In the settings and it only shows a few scenes. Not the one I just made. Back to the old app I go and it works there. How about adding that scene to my notification centre. Nope. Not there either. After all this time you would think they could at least make this app with the functionality of the previous one. At least they added a “all zones” feature so I can actually make scenes that turn on lights in different areas. But how long did that take? Guess I will be waiting again.

Multi-Bridge!

I agree with some of the other reviewers when I saw that the only thing I don’t like about Hue is that you have to manually switch bridges if you have lights at the office and your home. The app should auto detect the bridge on the network. I really hope this is in the works!

App is starting to get clunky

Clunky looking and clunky feeling after last update. One example is moving the controls to turn the motion sensors off/on into the sensor set up. You have to actually go into the sensor, scroll to the very bottom to hit the button and cancel out of the screen. The buttons were right beside the sensors for YEARS! Please put the off/on buttons back beside the sensor in the app. There’s no reason that bottom had to move.
Also, please think of less lame labs. There’s a lot of them now and only two are actually useful. The rest are just validating superfluous unneeded jobs.
Fan of most of your products, but you guys are getting unnecessarily technical at the expense of the ease of use to the consumer.

Super easy to configure

The app works great. Adding lights is a breeze and creating new rooms is a simple as naming the room and selecting the lights you want to be in it.
If you want me to give this baby 5 stars, add the ability to group lights. I would love to have the 5 lights that make up my chandelier appear under one name instead of 5 different lights.

Good app, recent change is annoying however

Overall I enjoy using this app. Better support for multiple bridges would be my main feature request.
However, a recent update also changed how disabling/enabling of accessories worked which has been a pain. Previously I could toggle motion sensors from the list, but now I have to do so by tapping on each sensor and disabling it, then pressing cancel (the save button doesn’t support disabling) to actually disable it. I’d like to be able to handle this through the list, or even better I’d like a single button to toggle all of my motion sensors. My use case is that I have cleaners come, and I don’t want them having to fuss with the Hue lights so I disable motion sensors and turn all of my lights to max brightness until they are done.
Thank you for the continued updates, but a better way (or at least the old way) of handling my use case would be much appreciated.

Room for improvement

The app has so much potential, it lacks adjustable settings in some areas.
The wake-up alarms should let you set the brightness you want the light to stop at. For now I believe it just lights up until it’s at 100%, but I wish I could set it to what I want between 1-100%.
Also, having the option of making the lights flash in the wake-up menu, and not only in the timer menu would be great. Why not just have all the options in every menu?
Other than that, I wish it was easier to add Siri commands to the HomeKit app. At the beginning it seemed to work and now it just doesn’t add to HomeKit (can’t see them in this app like I used to). It’s mostly about adding scenes with specific light colour or brightness. I only manage to turn them on or off, or ask Siri to dim to a certain percentage. No way of asking Siri to set up a certain colour tone (with Hue Ambiance lights).
Like I said, room for improvement.

Works well now

It took years of updates but this app is pretty solid now. Searching for new lights still doesn't work though, but the serial number method can be used instead. I like that when I make a change to the bulbs or scenes it magically spreads to all my IOS and iPadIOS devices. So if you put a bulb jn a remote location be sure to write down the serial number so you can program it later. (Okay, the GUI is bizarre and obcenely hard to program. Perhaps the guys rhat wrote this app should go to AA for a while and get sober).

Totally Useless

You wanna know just how useless this app is?... It no longer recognizes the existence of its own Hue Bridge, no matter how much tweaking, hacking, updating or rebooting I try. YET... my iPhone’s HomeKit recognizes it no problem at all. In fact, HomeKit is still able to operate all of the Hue Lights and their Scenes, etc, — just not the actual Hue App. But I am now no longer able to connect any new devices to it whatsoever. The Bridge’s big fat sync button won’t even work anymore. For some reason this has also rendered my Hue Switch to completely alter its presets to something entirely different. But because the Bridge’s top button will no longer function, I am unable to re-configure the Switch. As I said, no amount of troubleshooting has been successful, so I can only conclude that either the Bridge or the Switch, or both, are defective. And this system is only 3 years old. I mean really? Don’t even bother investing any money in the Philips system. Through these last 3 years it has been riddled with countless issues, hiccups, hang ups, freeze ups, and disfunctioning bulbs, etc — I’ve had to throw out 2 of them due to eventual defects. Believe me, you will be sorry in the long run if you invest a single dime in this awfully designed product and infrastructure. One word sums it all up over the long term... It eventually presents itself as... USELESS!

Good Product, Weak App

I’ve been a Hue user since day one. Current system has a dozen bulbs, 3 outdoor wall lamps, 5 motion sensors, 4 plugs, and 6 dimmer switches from Hue. The app has improved a lot over the years and current functionality is quite robust even for advanced functions like sensing and switching. I have a mixed environment, with lots of Wemo switches and plugs and Netatmo cameras, so I prefer to use Home app for scene and schedule management. HomeKit integration is Hue app’s weak point. Don’t ever bother to change a device name in Home app and be prepared if you add a new Hue product to a room in Hue app to have all your non-Hue devices moved to “Default Room”. I generally name my devices “[Room] [Function]” so I know which room to move the devices back to, but Hue app’s HomeKit mess is a pain. Also, the new outdoor sensors don’t currently report temperatures below 0°C.

Forcing updates is lame.

Seriously, let’s talk functionality.
You can’t expect good responses from the community when you force an update before I used my system at all. I’m lucky to have a remote that doesn’t require the app to turn my light off or on.
I have severe issues with light sensitivity when is a major reason I purchased the Philips hue. It’s a rude experience when I go to turn my lights of with my phone using hey Siri and she says she cannot find the lights. So I enter the app to do it manually, in the app there is no connection saying I must be on the same home network, so I double checked my connection and to no avail I can’t find the issue. The app did say how the bridge needs to do an update... but how would it know that if... you know... there was no internet connection.
This leaves a sour taste in my mouth, I do not understand the need to force an update before I use my lights. Spending time diagnosing this for a simple update? Reasons? Please? When this was working 100% yesterday?
Does this nickname work now?

Good strong lights , App isn’t the best

I got this light strip from hue for Christmas and today I just installed it so I wanted to get different colours so I got this app but since not all of my lights do not use hue lights I couldn’t get it to work because I needed it to connect to a hue bridge which I do not have in my house. Be careful of any corporation that switches hardware on its consumer without any subsidy or refund. This software won’t work with my original hub; the existing app for the old hub strips away features. Don’t spend money on the Hue because they will abandon you - and probably go out of business.

Worst part of the ecosystem

This app does a terrible disservice to the entire Philips Hue ecosystem on iOS. It constantly overrides HomeKit under the guise of bringing the apps in “sync”. Instead it overrides rooms you created in Apple's home app, deletes non-hue devices, and generally messes up your settings. I recommend deleting the app after every time you need it to set up a new device, and keep it off your phone and away from your HomeKit system.

Klunky

The bulbs work as expected but the app is klunky and frustrating. The logic flow is not intuitive at least from my North American perspective. Setting up scenes and rooms is poor and should be rethought. I would suggest the KISS rule. Get the user to plug in and turn on all bulbs. Then apply a room to each bulb using a pick list of defaults. Let the user add to those defaults in setup. Everything for a new user should be on the first page.

Needs multi bridge update

I love the look and function of this app except the lack of multi bridge support. Having to toggle between them is not support. If other third party apps can do it seamlessly so can Hue.
