Used to work, now janky. Will show my upcoming trip, then open it a few minutes later and says I have none. Almost missed my train because it wouldn’t display my boarding pass so I had to wait in line for a printed one. Please fix!

It’s mostly a reliable app that lets you generate a ticket for your wallet. However, some screens have the “close” button at the very top left right under the button to switch to the previous app so that’s frustrating.

In the past, for confirmed trips in business class, when you click “on board” then “menu”, it will show the actual meal choices that are available on that specific train (choice A is, choice B is, choice C is). Nowadays, that menu is just a generic “hot meal or fruit plate with drinks”. I prefer knowing beforehand what are the selections, as the PA system on the train is not always ideal.

You can check on your current already paid for tickets (not that it’s actually live updates, THEYRE usually wrong) but you can’t even book or pay for another trip??? You still have to visit the website or call? What is the point??? There’s not even an easy booking link to find like come on. Via rail needs to be more consumer friendly since you’re already ripping us off for crap slow services and no rails. Also why don’t you ever respond to negative feedback? Such crap.

I took a trip to Ottawa two weeks ago and the app worked fine. Now I can’t even log in. The app keeps complaining that there’s no Internet connection. With the latest update (1.31, Sept. 2021) I still can’t log in but the message is now “An Error Occurred.”

Why do businesses release useless apps like this? I thought it might make it easier to keep track of my upcoming tickets, I logged in but I get the message “you have no upcoming trips booked”. It’s also very difficult to navigate. The digital clock on my phone is right on top of the “close” button and it wasn’t letting me close the window. What a joke.

I booked and paid for a train trip for my daughter but only I can see the booking information in the VIA app. I’m not the one on the train, she is.
The actual passenger should be able to add the booking to their app too given the booking number and last name similar to airline apps.
Please add this needed feature to the next version. Thanks.

Unable to log in using my email or preference number and I have ensured password is correct with no avail. Error says “Please check your network connection to the internet and try again” - tested wifi and 5G connection, it it working fine.
Update: all seems to be working fine after trying again the next day. Although glitchy and with an outdated user interface, the app provides all its necessary information for viewing booked travel. I really only wanted to add the ticket to my Apple wallet and that works great. I would still use their online website for future bookings instead of this app.

The UI Needs Help

I feel like with each app update the developers are trying make the UI more modern and useable, but in reality it keeps getting worse. Unfortunately, despite this app only being a few years old, it’s visual style has become quite a disaster.
All of the UI elements seem very disconnected; and some parts of the UI are being stretched on some phones. There is a weird black top bar and bottom white bar on the iPhone X series around the rounded edges.
The messy visual stylings make the app very uncomfortable to use. I hope they start fresh with a version 2.0 that properly supports all screen sizes and has a style-consistent user interface.

There was a blockade on tracks that made Via cancel all their trains between Montreal and Toronto and the app never specified that. According to it the train was on time and arrived at Toronto when it did not even quit the station.... One chance that I looked on the website because if I had just looked the app I would have travel to the station for nothing....

Can't select the trip of my choice. It says please select your trip from various points in the day but there is no way to actually select anything. End of story. Half an hour wasted. Did not expect such amateurish crap from a major rail company. Get some real Web and App developers and get the job done. This is 2020 for crying out loud. If you want me to use your product you really have to improve.

I use the app on an iPad Pro. I am also visually impaired. Very visually impaired.
I adjust the iPad font size to use much larger fonts so I can see things, unfortunately,., the app does not scale properly with larger fonts. Please fix this

There’s a text field to enter train stations and after pressing search, it tells the user the station name is invalid and you must select from a nonexistent drop down list.

This app used to work for me. I could see my tickets and easily scan them. Now it never shows me trips and tickets so I have to zoom in on the email to get my ticket scanned.

Easy to Use and reliable

I commute by Via train daily, use a commuters pass and find the app easy to use to book trains, monitor my account and check train status. Once you book tickets, you can view all your bookings on the first page by scrolling up or down, view your boarding pass and add it to your wallet where it’s available for scanning without having to open your phone. You can even set up an alert that lets you know when the train is arriving. Wish it was compatible with my iWatch. Maybe next upgrade?

A few days ago I rated this app 1 star because they introduced an issue recognizing login credentials. Previously I had used this app for 2+ years without any problems. The new version 1.22.7 seems to fix the login issue. I have rated the app 3 stars for fixing the issue. I will update the review when I try out the new UI features they are claiming.

I’ve used this app since the first iteration and each version has been an improvement. There have been a few times when logging in was an issue but it was also happening on the VIA site and was soon resolved. Quick ticket purchases, updates on days of travel and notices when necessary signal to me consistent attention to my travel needs. The new clearer/cleaner screens make it easier, in particular, seeing and using the e-ticket. Well done.

The boarding pass QR codes that get stored in the Apple wallet are on a black background and the scanners on the train can’t read them...

When you have wasted 45 minutes trying to book a one way ticket from Toronto to Montreal and had to begin all over again to check the price for every single different train, and for every different class on every train, and you had to add the destinations and date and starting point again every single time, and then discover that as you add all of the information about the passengers, if you press the wrong little X once then you’re back at the starting point ONCE AGAIN ANOTHER TIME , and then it won’t take your credit card because it’s been two weeks since you last used the credit card and therefore you are probably lying and you’re going to have to phone your bank and spent 30 minutes on hold so that they can confirm that you are actually the owner of the card, and discover that VIA routinely does this every single time anyone uses a credit card, and you have now wasted an hour and 15 minutes just booking a single train ticket, you will realize, as I have done, that you should never ever ever in 1000 years use this app again. BOOK BY PHONE.
