Computer Bug/Feature Request

Firstly, I’m a big fan and thank you so much for building this product, I’m such a fan. The most recent upgrade is awesome, and I was relieved by how you fixed the goal setting UX interface. Give that designer a raise! Very intuitive and creative fix. Please add more ways to authenticate my bank. Text hasn’t been working for a day now and only email works. YNAB has the same issue but I don’t have an alternative 2FA option. Thanks. Just FYI there’s something wrong with the keyboard for the goal setting interface. I don’t know how to explain it but it’s not very responsive on the phone app. Also, I’d like to request to be able to move spending entries/categories/goals around on the phone, especially after creating them. Right now it defaults to the top of the section (Needs, Wants, etc.).

Wish there was better data analysis

The app so far is pretty good. Gives me a good idea of where my money is going. I have no issue paying bills but it’s the small purchases that really add up. The app helps a lot with that
I just wish there was more ways to view your spending and earnings on the app. I know on the website they have this but it would be nice to have on the app rather than an entire tab dedicated to “learning”. I would much rather have access to a deeper analysis of my income and expenses. I also noticed my purchases don’t update regularly, I find myself entering transactions more often than not. Considering this app is relatively expensive to the completion I find it disappointing
If you’re someone who struggles to figure out where your money is going, and want to be able to set aside money for purchases in an envelope strategy, this is for you

Apr 2025 new UI iOS- Feb 2025 updates make it harder to budget on mobile

*update Apr2025- still 1 star.
YNAB responded to the community and input on UI changes that necessitated 1 star review. Was hopeful, and appreciative of response.
However, April 2025 more new UI updates roll out, which again made accessibility to differentiate between different transactions more difficult. Mainly removing simplistic icons next to transactions, in lieu of more unnecessary text on screen.
Who roles out these UI updates, and why is there such a disconnect between iOS and desktop UIs.
Be fare warned again, YNAB likes to role out changes nobody asked for and isolates people with needs, and long time users.
FEB 2025 review-
I’ve been manual inputting transactions for a year no problem. App Updates in Feb 2025, and now remove cleared transaction amounts without reason, and hide key features that YNAB has always had upfront. Makes it difficult to know if my accounts are reconciled, and from an accessibility perspective harder to navigate on mobile. Oh btw clearing transactions are a hidden feature. If this is what I pay my subscription for, just to have key features removed, be wary.

Been using for years - highly recommended

This app is a key in my financial clarity, literacy, and progress. It is worth every dollar and has helped me save & preserve so much money because it keeps me on track, mindful, and intentional. Even when I slip up and am not managing it perfectly.

Could you stop with endless changes please?..

I love YNAB and can’t remember and understand how I managed to live financially before I found it (almost a 3-year user). But gooood.. yet another change to UI.. it’s starting to drive me insane.. I so appreciated the clean, easy to use, not overly “busy” or complicated, and minimalistic app and now it just keeps getting more and more stuff I couldn’t care less about. I mean “cost to be me”? Really? I already had a way to see how much I will need to assign to my categories for the month. Editing categories (order, name, target) was so easy and straightforward before, and now if I need to move things around I have to think for a bit every time how to do so. YNAB app is becoming like my grocery store nearby - every 2-3 weeks I go there and things are moved around “in an effort to make things better”, except it’s been going on for about 9 months now. It’s seriously frustrating and there’s really no reason for all this to be as complicated as it now is. Change for the sake of change rarely proved to be useful and sensible. I wish there was at least an option to toggle “new YNAB” on and off.. Annoying!!

Way too confusing and no support available

I would give this app zero stars if I could. I downloaded up 1.5 weeks ago, have spent 40+ hours so far trying to figure it out, watched a ton of their how-to videos in which they speak too fast and switch screens too fast to be able to keep up with what they’re trying to explain. I keep messing up with entries and then have to delete the entire category because there is no way to undo or correct what I entered wrong. I reached out for help to their support email, and received no help or support after 24 hours like they promised. What they really need for the price of this app ($180 CDN for 1 year) is a support phone number where they can remotely go over the shoulder to help you. After countless wasted hours, frustration, swearing and tears, this app is not worth it, especially with no help from their support team. If a budgeting app requires you to watch a truckload of videos and read a ton of how-to manuals and directives for every little thing as this one does and still leaves you hanging, you can be sure it isn’t a user-friendly app.

My most valuable subscription

YNAB gives you so much insight and control over your budget and how you’re spending. Goal setting and the ease at which you can allocate and move money around is slick and makes budgeting fun to do. The connections to the banks have improved a lot over time and there are less sync errors than the early days. Highly recommend, this will change your life if you embrace the philosophy.

Once loved, now questioning

I’ve been a YNAB user for more than 5 years and have LOVED it! However, a few months ago the app started forcing me to reauthorize my connection every time I open the app. I find it extremely frustrating and really devalues the convenience of using the paid app instead of the budgeting feature available through my bank. I’ve reached out to the YNAB support - who always answer quickly! - the the answer for this issue is - so sorry, it’s the bank doing its best to protect your account.
I love YNAB but am feeling very frustrated and considering cancelling my subscription.

Take control of your finances

This could use a two-tier pricing structure; one for users who use automatic bank syncing, and one for those who do not. I find manually adding transactions to be better for managing my spending.

Sept 2024 Update Review

Feb 2025: No, YNAB, there was nothing wrong with having the cleared balance and the working balance showing in each account. Or the easy ability to clear transactions. Why are there consistently poor design changes happening? Is this what all the sub price increases are going to? I’m done!
Sept 2024: No, YNAB, the sliders do not speed up anything on the app. It actually slows it down, and there is a delay when tapping “done”. This is worse than your new blueberry colour scheme. Please revert back to normal sliders!

Life Changing

Truly mean it. We have had some very tough economic times in recent years.
I started YNAB during the pandemic as it allowed me to manage finances and really gave me a wake up call that I needed to be more engaged and aware of finances.
Since then I have been able to age my money over 90 days and save up for small and massive expenses such as purchasing winter tires, and full renovation of my entire house.
I was living pay check to pay check prior to YNAB without ever putting any money into savings and planning for emergency expenses.
I used the old traditional budgeting method that only tracked how much you were spending per month rather than rectifying it.
I found out about YNAB by reading “I will teach you to be rich” by Ramit Sethi and have put my investments on auto pilot with the help of YNAB.
I am 40 years old married with two kids ages 6 and 4 and this tool has more than paid for itself 100x.
I am a commission sales rep selling cars during a recession and this tool has helped me prepare for the worse and not get too excited from the great months.
Thank you YNAB for helping me change my life for the better.
I can’t wait to teach these valuable skills to my kids.

Not Impressed

I’ve used YNAB for about 2 years. While there are some nice features, some core features are just flat out broken. The biggest feature of this software is the auto-import of transactions from your bank accounts. Every day I need to re-authorize all my bank accounts to re-sync the transaction data. When that breaks, which it does every 2 weeks. After following direction provided by the support team to fix the issue the accounts will sync. But 200+ transactions will be imported that are duplicates which then need to be manually removed. Also the cost of this is insane considering what you get and the complete lack of new features and fixing and bugs.

From Best Budgeting Tool to Budget-Buster: Is YNAB Still Worth It?

I genuinely hate leaving this review because, fundamentally, YNAB (You Need A Budget) is one of the best budgeting tools I’ve ever used. Its approach to budgeting is truly unique and effective, and the value it provides in terms of helping people manage their finances is incredible.
That said, the price has gotten out of hand. At $160/year, it’s difficult to justify the cost, especially when you consider that just four years ago, it was $60/year. That’s an increase of $100 in such a short period, which feels unsustainable—and ironically, it’s not something I can easily plan for, even with using YNAB.
In my opinion, YNAB feels worth about $100/year, but at its current price (and the way it keeps rising), it’s hard to recommend. On top of that, despite all this money coming in, their direct import functionality still isn’t reliable. Every year, without fail, it stops working for weeks at a time with no clear explanation or resolution.
While YNAB remains an incredible tool, the combination of a steep price increase and ongoing technical issues makes it hard to overlook these frustrations.
DanielKuhlwein
Version 2.12
2025-01-17

Don’t bother.

We tried this app out on the recommendation of friends of ours. They love it, but I feel like I really wasted my time with it.
First, one year’s subscription costs $150 in Canada and with current inflation and struggles to make ends meet, a BUDGETING app at that price…? I was expecting a lot. Like, magical unicorns and pixie dust and singing woodland creatures. And at first glance, it seemed good. There’s a lot to learn and get the hang of but I was figuring it out. However…
Second, the app WOULD NOT stay connected to my bank accounts. Neither financial institution. I kept needing customer support to get this basic function going. It wouldn’t even give me an error message or prompt a reauthentication. Just wouldn’t download transactions even when I had just synced it.
I really expected a lot more for $150. Customer support was quick and friendly, tho. Thumbs up to those guys 👍🏻

No longer worth it

Been using since ynab 3, don’t have a problem paying a subscription when the developers reinvest in the product and the price is reasonable, but the current functionality is virtually identical to ynab 4 and what they’re asking for a subscription these days is absolutely bonkers. Despite what they’ll try and say. At the end of the day, it’s just a spreadsheet with syncing, don’t let their marketing fool you, there are equivalent options out there for a fraction of the cost or even no cost. Props to the ynab marketing team for on their incredible marketing though, they’ve fooled a lot of people into thinking their product is worth the price of admission. It used to be, but it certainly isn’t anymore. The cost for one year is DOUBLE the outright purchase price of ynab 4. I’ll be sticking to ynab 4 as it continues to work perfectly fine and I’ve already paid for it so no need to pay for exploitative subscription pricing. You too can use Ynab4…if you know where to look ;)

Not for international or complicated finances

I used it (or tried to) for a year but it wasn’t for me. I know people love it, but it over complicates everything, which is hard enough when I have bank accounts in two countries. It doesn’t support multiple currencies and it doesn’t recognize a lot of major banks or my mortgage company, and rewrites things when I try to change currencies. If you buy things on credit cards for the rewards points it punishes you by making spending totals impossible to see clearly, even if you pay it off on time every month. I just want to see how much money I have and where it’s going, and it doesn’t do that one thing I need.

Too slow. To many reconnections needed

This budgeting app seemed like a good idea the first day I used it. However, I have been trying to use it for several days in a row to get to know it better, and to work on my spending habits. The problem is I have to reconnect to my bank accounts each time I open the app, or at least each new day. And the process is slow and tedious. Sometimes taking five minutes for each bank account I have. I don’t have that kind of time or patience. Therefore, I deleted the app while I was still on the free trial.

New version with over-animated UI elements is horrible

Please, folks, why does “cover overspending” have an animation that takes seconds to play out and then it takes more time to load the categories and then another animation to confirm your tap … this is a budget app, yeah? Not Duolingo or whatever? You’ve done your job when you get out of the way, not when I spend “more time on platform”. So when an import comes in and I have 8 categories to cover I curse your names each time the damn animation plays out.
This is bad UX and you know it. You can do your animations as long as they don’t animate interactive elements and don’t prevent input.
This is a great app, I’ll change my review back to 5 stars the moment you fix this.

Should be free for how much effort is required

After trying a different app that was free and finding it very frustrating to use, I was ready to spend the $150 on this app with the idea that it will save me money in the long run. I spent a ton of time linking all our banking to it and meticulously added all the bills and expenses we have to pay. After about a week, I was wondering why none of the numbers were updating and then I found it needed me to reauthorize for some reason. I never got through the ridiculously long and wordy tutorial video and I found the layout on the iPhone app to be less than intuitive. The tutorial is for using a computer which is basically saying this phone app is just an accompaniment to the desktop app, so don’t expect to use it exclusively with success. If you don’t have a computer to run it, don’t bother. Also, I’m not convinced it could sort through all the transactions and correctly subtract the amounts spent, so it’s no better than a free app in that sense because there’s so much manual entry required. In the end, it reminded me of some basic budgeting principles that I will use with the existing tools I already have. Don’t waste your money, save it…that is the point.

Recent update slowed app down

App was great before recent update.
Now they’ve added animations and what not to each step between allocation of funds to cover balances and everything in between. The lag between hitting a button and getting a response in turn is a huge annoyance. If the app increase was to pay for those features, rewind the clock back.
This app at its roots is great for financial planning and budgeting, it’s the reason I have used it for 6 years. But this recent update is hot trash.

Far too expensive for what you get

It’s essentially a spreadsheet app with syncing to accounts - a lot of which don’t work anymore. Not worth the price tag when cheaper options do the same thing.

Good concept, poor performance

I really wanted to like this app and have it be the replacement I needed for Mint. Unfortunately, the imports from my bank account and my credit card are just too slow and clunky. I am constantly having to reconnect my accounts and the transactions are so delayed. While it works retroactively to track my spending, it just does not reflect the activity in my accounts and credit cards quickly enough for me to track my budgets throughout the month. This was a real waste of $100.

It doesn’t work with CIBC

Although it’s has a great interface, it just doesn’t works with CIBC . I needed to reauthorize the banks account every time I logged in to the app. I canceled my subscription after getting tired of sending code all the time . Just use Quicken instead

Loads of issues with connectivity

I’ve been using this app for a number of years and until 2024 found it very useful. The app helped us pay off debt, save money and anticipate future needs. Where this app has failed recently is with reliable connectivity to our financial institutions in Canada. One institution (Tangerine Financial) is always delayed by months at a time, PC Financial has been completely restricted since Feb 2024 and my RBC accounts now disconnect every 24 hours. I just received notice that the cost of this app is increasing again and I’m no longer sure what I’m paying for? As the cost has risen the app is less reliable and I’m now entering/clearing almost every transaction manually. The fee just no longer makes any sense!

Unauthorized billing is a no-go for me

Not only does YNAB increase the price of its subscriptions, they send you an email informing you that you must accept the increase if you want your subscription to renew. If you dont accept, they charge you anyway.
After several months of use, the application becomes cumbersome and slow.
Calculations are not alwais 100% accurate.

Offensively large price increase! (Canada)

Well I’m out — the new price structure is a real slap in the face - north of $20 per month in Canada. I don’t know how YNAB did their price benchmarking and thought that increase could be born by their subscribers. The value just isn’t there for that amount of money. Do better YNAB!

Price increase is a joke

I can understand price increases can be necessary sometimes, but to nearly triple the monthly sub price in Canada is just a bad idea. Was going to resubscribe but after seeing the price increase I uninstalled it and am looking elsewhere.

Price in Canada

They’ve hiked the price. And don’t offer Canadian dollar subscriptions, so it’s around $130 CAD per year. Crazy.

Great Software, Not worth the Price now

I love this budgeting app. I’ve used it before it was even a subscription model and have stuck with it for so many years (I want to say over 8 years?). It has helped tremendously with tracking my finances and the app is slick and easy to use. Unfortunately with the new price, my monthly cost was going to go from $8.99 a month to $18.49 a month. It’s an insane jump in price and I just can’t justify it. As much as I love YNAB I’ll be looking into other apps or systems.

Price

The price doubled overnight for what is a great app but not worth double the price.

Doesn’t keep promises

Several years ago, YNAB promised lifetime pricing for legacy users. They have not followed through on this promise, and have not responded to their users complaints about this issues. I used to think YNAB’s business practices stood apart from other organizations - I’ve since found out that they’re no different.

Price increase

The recent massive price increase makes this app not worth the money for what they are asking. The features aren’t good enough. Cancelled my sub.

Too expensive

The price jumped by $25 this year. I am not willing to pay for this much money for budgeting software.

Just doubled my price

Discovered that as of December 1, 2021 that they are doubling the costI have to pay for the product. No email, no announcement, just a FAQ on their webpage I heard about through social media. They just lost this 4+ year customer.

Egregious price increase

For someone locked into the lifetime price of $45, I’m appalled that now I have to pay twice that amount annually to continue this service when I don’t even use all of its features (e.g., syncing, online support, videos).

One time fee > Subscription

The irony is a monthly subscription for a budgeting app is not in the budget.

YNAB Changed My Life!

I joined YNAB in February 2021... I never really knew how to budget/forecast. I now have less than $1,000 debt, I saved enough to get my son’s braces, and I’m saving for a new fence! I’m almost a full month ahead in my finances which I never thought would be possible! All the videos on YouTube are such a great support tool! (shout out to HIFH and Nick True!) I know if I have any questions there’s always someone to help me. This is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself! I’m already teaching my teens how to use YNAB! My only regret is that I didn’t find it sooner!

Useless for Canadians

DOES NOT SYNC TO MAJOR CANADIAN BANKS.
Get ready to spend way more time that you can’t spare on updating your YNAB budget. Once you subscribe you’re stuck with it.

Spend money to save? No thanks

Soo expensive! I’m trying to save money and they want to charge me over $100. No way. This should have been disclosed in the App Store.

Suspicious bank activity - coinscidence?

Downloaded this app on the recommendation from my Facebook moms group. Set it all up and linked my bank account after reading a few articles and reviews raving about this company’s security measures. That same night I get a notification that someone tried to log into my online banking but failed to answer the security question. I have been using online banking for over ten years and this is the first time anything like this has happened. I’m sorry but a bit too much of a coincidence. Unlinked bank and deleted app. I’ll use excel to track my spending.

Love it but wish it would support my bank

This made a huge difference to our family finances. The reason I only gave it 4 stars is because our bank (RBC Royal Bank of Canada) is not supported, why I have to enter everything manually.

BS misleading tactics

App might be good but I’ll never find out cuz you put a paywall behind it and didn’t tell until AFTER I gave you my personal info so thanks for your dishonest, shady tactics! Hope you shut down

I flipping love this thing. Love it

I worked as a financial professional for 4 years. I’ve explored dozens of options for budgeting and cash flow solutions. YNAB is BY FAR the best one. Intuitive, easy to set up and use. TONS of resources for support, available in web and mobile. The only thing the app is missing is a calendar view to visualize recurring transactions. It that’s really a minor thing. USE this now.

Best App Ever YNAB!!!

I have used this app just a few days short of a year and I LOVE it. It has changed my financial life from always looking for funds to pay my monthly/yearly bills and taxes to now having funds set aside for these bills plus savings. I never have to worry about what is in my bank account as it is allocated already to different buckets each month. I TOTALLY recommend the YNAB app, it is AWESOME!!!

My bank account has never been higher

So grateful for this tool that has allowed me to be more aware and flexible with our money and budget! It has opened my eyes and I am more excited to see how much more I can save towards our safety net. Our bank account has never been higher!

Life. Changing.

Within my first pay period of using YNAB, I was able to stop dipping into my overdraft and charging new items without immediately paying it down. I realize that I had some pretty significant background anxiety regarding finances and a feeling of never having enough. I feel been able to dial back the anxiety and I don’t feel deprived when I’m making spending choices during my day.
