Romeo Santos’ first instalment of Fórmula, Vol. 1 in 2011 helped launch Dominican bachata—with its hints of R&B sensuality and hip-hop swagger—into the pop mainstream. Vol. 2 crowns the New York singer and former Aventura frontman as the style’s worldwide king. Santos flexes his newfound ambition here, turning the album into a globe-spanning party with a killer guest list: Carlos Santana spikes “Necio” with some fierce blues-rock licks and Drake drops moody bars on the slow jam “Odio.” Of course, there are still plenty of ballads featuring his gorgeous falsetto, along with those acoustic grooves that give bachata its delicate sway.
