“Black music is the ability to express emotions and traditions.”

In honour of Black Music Month 2021, South African DJ DBN Gogo has created a special mix. Below, she shares her thoughts on Black music and how its rich legacy comes alive in her work.

“Black music is the ability to create memories and express all of the emotions and traditions that are represented by people of colour. Music has been a platform people of colour have used to take authority and direct it in a way they feel most comfortable and confident. In the mix, there is a moment where I use my native language of isiZulu and a ritual calling in the Zulu tradition to honor and uphold what I stand for (‘Weh Gogo’). I also included songs that represent my colourful energy and the ability to be a proud royal Zulu woman. Another highlight is my song ‘French Kiss’ featuring Dinho, where I take my connection to French culture and my past journeys all over the world. In that time, I learned so much about different cultures, which I’m incorporating into music.”
