Miley invites you to escape into her and Dua’s “camp, punk-rock fantasy.”

On “Prisoner,” the latest single from Miley Cyrus’ forthcoming album, she and Dua Lipa plug into the neon, propulsive dance pop of the early 1980s. “This collaboration is pop-culture escapism in its purest and most unapologetic form,” she tells Apple Music. “For a few moments you can be removed from reality and get sucked into our camp, punk-rock fantasy.” You might hear flickers of Olivia Newton-John’s flirty 1981 hit “Physical,” a blockbuster single that bridged the gap between disco and rock with its angular synths and soft commercial touch. But while Newton-John played breathy and coy, Miley and Dua are all muscle, belting out each line with fiery force. Miley also hinted at what to expect on an accompanying retro music video: “I think it’ll introduce our generation to references that will be new to our audience, like The Runaways, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the true star, Divine.” Listen to the song and pre-add Plastic Hearts now. Once the album is released, the whole thing will be available in your library instantly.
