Immersive, classic vibes that urge players to victory
Toby Fox’s score for Undertale, the acclaimed indie RPG he also developed, deepens the immersive experience by harking back to soundtracks from games of yore, like The Legend of Zelda and Chrono Trigger. Light tracks like “Start Menu” beep and boop their way along, while the more involved “Ruins” sets an insistent, rain-like piano melody over some synthy pads and a clever beat. The amusingly short “Dogbass” is a jazzy jaunt, while the similarly inclined “Dogsong” recalls the playful quests of Super Mario World. Fox’s funky melodies on “Megalovania” are geared toward inspiring players to finish the tale and achieve victory.
